Breath of Fire

Kragat, Master of the Breath of Fire discipline, purges an evil artificer's fortress together with his disciples.

History
When dragons first heard of Reshar and how he managed to find new ways of using the humanoids weak weapons, most dragons laughed and returned to their arcane studies and crushing their oponents with their mighty bodies.

Some dragons however saw the potential of the Sublime way, and started to practise it to improve their already formidable natural capacities.

And then, some dragons noticed however that there was a glaring hole in the Sublime way. It focused on simple mortal weapons like blades and axes, teeths and claws.

But the dragons had a much more powerfull weapon available to them. They could breath forth the elements themselves. If the Sublime way worked so well with the weapons of inferior creatures, what could be achieved by applying it's teachings to the greatest weapon wielded by any creature in existence?

Thus the Breath of Fire discipline was born. The name comes from the legend that an ambitious red dragon first developed it to get the edge over a neighbour gold dragon rival. Thanks to constant breathing exercises and continuous use of his flames, that red dragon slayed his gold oponent in a fantastic air duel that set the sky itself ablaze.

From then, that red dragon taught what he had learned to his hatchlings, wich ended up teaching it to other chromatic dragons, wich ended up spilling the secrets to a cleverly disguised bronze dragon, and from there the discipline spread to all dragonkind.

Despite it's name, the Fire Breath discipline works well with all breath weapons.

Any creature who has breath weapons and picks up a level of a ToB class may swap one of his availables disciplines for this one.

Unless otherwise noticed, every strike of this discipline starts with you using one of your breath weapons.

Fire Emblem
Breath of Fire (Boost)
Level: Crusader 5, Swordsage 5, Warblade 5
Initiation Action: Swift Action
Range: -
Target: you
Duration: 1 round
Save: none

This manever can only be used with HP damage breaths. You crystalize your breath into a melee weapon with a shape of your choice. It replaces your bite attack for the duration, has the same reach as your bite attack, it deals the same damage as your breath weapon (do not add or substract any other bonus to this damage) and doesn't allow saves, but you must suceed on a melee touch attack to hit your oponent. If you have enough Bab you can perform iterative attacks, and you can also combine it with your remaining natural weapons in a full attack.

If you don't have a bite attack you can wield this weapon by holding it with both hands with your normal reach. If you don't have two free hands or bite attack this maneuver is useless to you.

6th level
Curtain Fire
Breath of Fire (Strike)
Level: Crusader 6, Swordsage 6, Warblade 6
Initiation Action: Fullround action
Range: breath attack
Target: see text.
Duration: 2 rounds
Save: as the breath weapon

Instead of one single attack, you divide your breath into dozens or even hundreds of tiny balls of energy that fill the area around you. When using this maneuver it affects one 5 foot cube per IL (double this if your breath weapon is normally a cone). Each cube must be placed whitin your  breath weapon's reach. Creatures on the selected  areas must make regular breath weapon saves or be affected as struck by your breath weapon, but if they suceed they take no damage (or other effect from your breath weapon) and can move to an adjacent non-affected area (if they choose not to move they're affected anyway). These balls of energy last for 2 rounds.

Heaven and Hell wind
Breath of Fire (Strike)
Level: Crusader 6, Swordsage 6, Warblade 6
Initiation Action: Standard action
Range: breath attack
Target: creatures in the breath attack area.
Duration: instantaneous
Save: as the breath weapon

You heal  the full damage that you rolled for your breath attack. You don't heal more damage for hiting multiple oponents or heal less damage for the enemies having resistances/immunities.

Perfect fire lotus
Breath of Fire (Stance)
Level: Crusader 6, Swordsage 6, Warblade 6
Initiation Action: Swift action
Range: -
Target: you.
Duration: stance
Save: none

While in this stance, your breath weapon ignores an amount of elemental resistance from your targets equal to your IL. If they have immunity to your breath attack element, they take damage equal to your IL or half your breath weapon damage, wichever is lower. This amount is halved on a successful save..  This applies only to HP damage breaths.

7th level
Crimson erradication
Breath of Fire (Strike)
Level: Crusader 7, Swordsage 7, Warblade 7
Initiation Action: Standard action
Range: breath attack
Target: creatures in the breath attack area.
Duration: instantaneous
Save: as the breath weapon

Your breath weapon deals +8d6 damage, of the same element as the breath weapon(including force damage). This applies only to HP damage breaths.

Ruby dust
Breath of Fire (Strike)
Level: Crusader 7, Swordsage 7, Warblade 7
Initiation Action: Swift action
Range: breath attack
Target: creatures in the breath attack area.
Duration: instantaneous
Save: as the breath weapon

You use a breath weapon as a swift action.

Flame Breaker

Fire Emblem (Strike)
Level: Crusader 7, Swordsage 7, Warblade 7
Initiation Action: Standard action
Range: breath attack
Target: creatures in the breath attack area.
Duration: instantaneous
Save: as the breath weapon

Your breath weapon deals quadruple damage to inanimate, unatended objects and ignores any special resistances they may have. If it deals enough damage to destroy a wall or other obstacle, it punches trough and fully affects anything behind. It is possible to destroy multiple walls/obstacles with this.

8th level
Heaven and Hell judgement
Breath of Fire (Stance)
Level: Crusader 8, Swordsage 8, Warblade 8
Initiation Action: Swift action
Range: -
Target: you.
Duration: stance
Save: none

While in this stance, you may double the range of your breath weapon by applying a -2 penalty on the save DC. Maximum of 10 increases.

Scarlet eternity
Breath of Fire (Strike)
Level: Crusader 8, Swordsage 8, Warblade 8
Initiation Action: Standard action
Range: breath attack
Target: creatures in the breath attack area.
Duration: instantaneous
Save: as the breath weapon

As a single standard action, you may fire your breath twice. If you have multiple breaths, then you may fire any combination of two as a standard action. Roll only once for recharge of the chosen breath weapons.

9th level
Crimson oblivion
Breath of Fire (Strike)
Level: Crusader 9, Swordsage 9, Warblade 9
Initiation Action: Standard action
Range: breath attack
Target: creatures in the breath attack area.
Duration: instantaneous
Save: as the breath weapon

Your breath weapon deals +16d6 damage, of the same element as the breath weapon(including force damage). This applies only to HP damage breaths. In adition, you fully ignore resistances and immunities from your targets.

A friend of mine commented that there was no ToB discipline for breath attacks, so I decided to correct this. Now breath using characters can play with the sublime way as well! Enjoy!

Note: this school is aimed at players/monsters who are multiclassing a lot since you need a good breath weapon for it to be worth it, so I choose for none of the maneuvers to have pre-reqs besides IL, just like Stone Dragon.

Always thought this idea was cool, but a few things:

The level entry in a maneuver description is supposed to be the level of the maneuver, not the level you can get it.

I have trouble understanding the imagery of Destroyer Flame. What about a Strike which lets you spit at a single target as a ranged touch attack without requiring a recharge? (and can be used to sunder)

Maybe a set of stances which apply to a specific element only? The acid stance lets your breath weapon poison opponents for instance.

Well the whole school is suposed to be element-neutral, and single ToB schools aren't suposed to have lots of stances for each of your "weapon choices". If anything I think that would be better handled by feats

From a player's PoV how is this intended to work? I can see some interesting things with it but only if you have a racial breath weapon. You even say that it is intended for people who multiclass a lot and they just wouldn't be able to get the IL for higher level maneuvers if that is the case.

Follow up would be how do you intend for these to interact with Meta-Breath feats? I could see someone stacking this and MB feats up to make crazy powerful breath weapons.

Dragonborn template, or dragonfire adept/dragon shaman, they're all standard ways of geting breath weapons.

Also the dragon and half-dragon classes from my improved monster classes grant auto-scaling breaths with just a couple of levels.

Meta breath feats are already crazy powerfull by themselves.

So, I guess the same thing happens that when you have the pouncing raging mongoose leap attacker shock trooper, or the leadership crusader with warlord's charge togheter with his dozens of minions.

You could pull out some pretty powerfull combos with this and metabreath feats, but I don't believe they would be worst than super chargers or other super damage tricks martial dudes can pull off.

Interesting, but I noticed no Strike actually GRANTS a breath attack.

Are there ways of getting one without being a dragon? Isn't there a class or template that does?

He just mentioned Dragonborn, which for some reason I thought had BW 1/d not 1d4 r. There is also dipping dragonfire adept. and 4 levels of Dragon shaman.

I'm reading all of them in detail now. You keep using "pure damage" you may want to change that to HP damage as pure damage would still allow it to be applied to ability damage, which I believe was your intent to remove.

edit: more notes
Burning revenge should be a (counter) not (strike)
for the +xd6 boosts you don't need to say element including force. just say of the same type and include this can only be applied to BWs that cause HP damage.
Strafing Runs should be (boost)
Red Alert seems redundant as very few creatures other than good dragons have multiple breath weapons.
Elemental assault should be (boost), also should be reworded a bit. Either "after your breath weapon damage is resolved" or "after your breath weapon has dealt damage" the former allowing the teleport any time after using it while the latter requires it having dealt damage to someone in order to teleport.
Fire emblem is strangely worded in shaped how you want and replaces bite attack. I would say word it as "shaped as a weapon you are proficient with or as a replacement to your bite attack" so that those who don't have a bite can use it as well. Also probably word the second part as "attacks made with this maneuver are touch attacks".
Curtain of fire has a typo 'of' instead of 'or'
Perfect Fire lotus probably needs to be reworded as well. For those with immunity it should probably read they take IL damage or Half of the rolled amount, whichever is less. This amount is halved on a successful save.
Ruby Dust should be (boost)
Flame Breaker hardness doesn't apply to energy types so would be redundant. Resistances should include objects ability to ignore half of the damage from most energy types, but having it explicitly stated wouldn't hurt.
Heaven and Hell Judgement duration should be stance. I haven't seen this on any other stances but they should all have this. With it as instantaneous it becomes a permanent effect and they can use other stances while gaining the benefit of that one forever.
Scarlet eternity since you normally can't do 2 bw at once you may want to clarify that if the same one is used twice you use the shorter/longer/combined recharge time.

Strafing Runs should be (boost)
Bounding assault is a strike. Why should strafing run not be?

Red Alert seems redundant as very few creatures other than good dragons have multiple breath weapons.
There's some tricks to get multiple breath weapons besides being a good dragon. That maneuver is aimed for them.

Elemental assault should be (boost), also should be reworded a bit.
Again, check bounding assault.

Ruby Dust should be (boost)
It's a swift action strike. Boosts, well, boost you in some way. Ruby dust hits people in the face.

Flame Breaker hardness doesn't apply to energy types so would be redundant. Resistances should include objects ability to ignore half of the damage from most energy types, but having it explicitly stated wouldn't hurt.
Made it deal quadruple damage and ignore special resistances they may have.

Corrected all the other problems like you sugested, thanks for pointing them out!

The reason for saying many of those should be boosts is that they aren't an attack or enhancing an attack in and of themselves.

Looking at Bounding Assault I see it is a no AoO replacement for a charge and is a full round action. Being a full round prevents it from being a boost. I see that is the issue with those you listed as well. I was just working on the general rule that i stated above and didn't notice them being full rounders.

Ruby dust doesn't change anything about the attack itself only your cost, ie standard action to swift. It doesn't add damage or give a new use. It also doesn't allow it to be used multiple times in a round unless there is no recovery delay.

On the same note as the last line. For those that reduce recovery time you should probably say if it has a minimum of 1 round or that it can't be negative, just in case someone wants to get tricky with wording.

Elemental mantra

What about those rare examples that are neither line nor cone? (I believe some gem dragons have those)

Quote
Mountain inhale

Reduced by 3 rounds I assume? What about those that have per day breath weapons?

Quote
Destroyer flame

lacks the 'Breath of Fire (Strike)' tag.

Quote

More review later, levels 1 and 2 are definitely fine.

-Indeed reduced by 3 rounds. I guess I'll put a clause that it allows you to use per day breath weapons one more time per day.
-Will fix typo.
