Okay. First, take a Ranger. two weapon or archery, boring, whatever.  Then, from Complete Mage, add the "Arcane Hunter" option from page 32.  Then (making the ranger Exalted, I guess), from Book of Exalted Deeds, add the "Nemesis" feat from page 44, applying it to that 'Favored Enemy - Arcanists' option.

So... the question is, what classes and abilities does this option autodetect? What *spellcasting classes and options* does it not autodetect?

Assuming the spellcaster has not taken appropriate countermeasures (Mind Blank, Nondetection, Antimagic Field, etc.), what does this say "Ding! A favoured enemy of you is within 60 feet of you!"

Here is a list of base spellcasting-like classes that I have found that it does NOT work on:
Ranger
Cleric
Favored Soul
Shugenja
Adept
Healer
Archivist
Druid
Spirit Shaman
Paladin
Psion
Psychic Warrior
Erudite
Psychic Rogue
Soulknife
Incarnate
Soulborn
Totemist
Factotum
Artificer
Dragon Shaman
Shadowcaster
Truenamer
Divine Bard

And here is a list of base spellcasting classes that it *does* work on, that I found:

Warlock
Wizard
Sorcerer
Warmage
Spellthief
Magewright
Wu Jen
Hexblade
Duskblade
Beguiler
Dread Necromancer
Bard
Dragonfire Adept (thanks havok!)

PrC's that add could spellcasting type things to someone who didn't have any before the PRC, that the ability would NOT cover:

Apostle of Peace
Beloved of Valarian
Blackguard
Champion of Gwynharwyf
Consecrated Harrier
Emissary of Barachiel
Purebreath Devotee
Slayer of Domiel
Temple Raider of Oldimmara
Vassal of Bahamut

(To be completed)

PrC's that can add arcane spellcasting to someone who didn't have any before the PrC, that the ability WOULD cover:

Assassin
Suel Arcanomach
Avenger
Celebrant of Sharess
Prime Underdark Guide
Master of the South Wind
Son of Mercy
(To be completed)

Have I missed any base classes? Have I misplaced any base classes? Are any of these actually NOT 'seems to cast spells or do magic stuff' type classes, so they shouldn't be on any of the two lists in the first place? For the PrC lists, I've tried to limit myself to PrC's that ADD spellcasting to someone who previously would have none -- can I have help completing those lists? I couldn't find any classes that added psionics to someone who had little or no psionic ability -- can someone help me with those? Also, what FEATS that add spellcasting would make this ability turn on or not?  What about races intended for use in player characters that have some type of innate spellcasting? Is this gnomesense? Also, what major spellcasting enemies that you would think this option would work on, does this actually NOT work on (something with tons of SLA's but no actual normal spells, but I don't know what THAT list would look like...)?

look at the feat and the Alternative Favored Enemy as well ...:

NEMESIS [EXALTED]
You are the holy bane of creatures of a particular type.
Prerequisites: Favored enemy class ability.
Benefit: Choose one of your favored enemies. You can sense the
presence of creatures of this type within 60 feet, as well as pinpoint
their exact location (distance and direction) relative to you. Normal
barriers and obstructions do not block this supernatural ability,
allowing you to sense the presence and location of creatures
behind doors or walls, for example. This feat does not allow you to
see an invisible or hidden creature (although you can still discern
its location).
In addition to sensing the presence of your favored enemy,
you deal +1d6 points of damage on weapon attack rolls made
against evil representatives of the favored enemy creature type.
Special: You can choose this feat multiple times. Its effects do
not stack. Each time you select this feat, it applies to a different
favored enemy.

ARCANE HUNTER
Rangers learn to track and hunt creatures of a certain type
when choosing a favored enemy. Some rangers concern
themselves less with what a creature is, and more with what
it does. These rangers learn to identify signs of the arcane
and make it their business to combat those who use arcane
magic in opposition to their goals.
Class: Ranger.
Level: 1st.
Special Requirement: Knowledge (arcana) 1 rank.
Replaces: At 1st level, you do not select a favored enemy
from Table 3-14 in the Flayer's Handbook. At 5th, 10th, 15th,
and 20th level, you can choose favored enemies as normal.
Benefit: At 1st level, you gain favored enemy (arcanists).
This feature works just like the favored enemy ability (PH
47). The bonuses granted apply to any character capable of
casting arcane spells or using invocations
(but not other
spell-like abilities).

it also workson a lot of PrCs ... example:

Assassin
Suel Arcanomach
etc....

one easy way to tell if your target is an arcane caster .... if he casts a spell he is a caster, if he is not using a Holy Symbol as a Focus, he probably is an arcane caster

Also, nemesis is supernatural, so anything that shuts down Su abilities kills it, as well.

A gygaxian dungeon is like the world's most messed up game show.

Behind door number one: INSTANT DEATH!
Behind door number 2: A magic crown!
Behind door number 3: 4d6 giant bees, and THREE HUNDRED POUNDS OF HONEY!
They don't/haven't, was the point. 3.5 is as dead as people not liking nice tits.

Sometimes, their tits (3.5) get enhancements (houserules), but that doesn't mean people don't like nice tits.

Though sometimes, the surgeon (DM) botches them pretty bad...
Best metaphor I have seen in a long time.  I give you much fu.
Three Errata for the Mage-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Barbarian-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Monks doomed to die,
One for the Wizard on his dark throne
In the Land of Charop where the Shadows lie.

It can only be attributable to human error.

You can also detect dragonfire adept and most creatures with inherent spellcasting.

Right, that's why I mentioned, "Assuming the spellcaster has not taken appropriate countermeasures (Mind Blank, Nondetection, Antimagic Field, etc.)"

Unless, of course, he is an arcane caster who has taken Eschew Materials, or is using some leaves and berries as a focus (Druid, and those are totally not a holy symbol.. ), or is any of the arcane casters that don't actually need arcane focuses for whatever reason... I'm pretty sure Warmage doesn't...

How would mindblank stop it.?  Nothing in nemesis says [mind affecting]

Eh, the wizard have more money than them combined, he could in theory just use all his money on a fleet of trained attack mules, but then we aren't playing 3.5 but zergling rushing in Starcraft instead.

Also, in Eberron, anything with any kind of Dragonmark.
