I avoid games that require three players to play. Sometimes you can find one other person, but much of the time getting a third wheel involved can be a pain. (Say when it's just me an my wife at 10 pm at night.) Two player games are great, but sometimes you need more players.

Lately I've been getting games that work well with two players, but 4 is the optimal number. But the problem with these games is if you have more than 4 players, and the game only supplies parts for 4. Dunegeon Lords for example, would be a blast with a larger group than 4. It wouldn't be fair to have to sit someone out. The same goes for Red Dragon Inn; (I can't find Red Dragon Inn 2 anywhere, which would allow up to 8 players.)

Carcassonne base set (at least it used to) started with 5 players. (An odd number.) An expansion pack added an additional color/player.
