So I'm trying to make a charlatan, like the prestige class, though I'm not sure what I should do beyond that class.
my DM for my current game is letting me start as a charlatan instead of waiting til level 5, but what I should do beyond that I don't know.

all I have so far is Human Charlatan level 1, feats: Skill Focus (Bluff), Skill Focus (UMD), but once I hit level 5 where am I to go? what really works well for perpetuating the image of a fake mage?
now before people tell me what I should do, I should mention what I can't or won't, I need to stick to books from core, and planescape though I can pull from outside sources so long as it's limited in amount and I run it past my DM first. my level and feats are already established I can't change that now, what I'd like is some advice on how to proceed in the future, also my character can't learn any magic, maybe SLAs but no full on spellcasting, I'd prefer him to be an actual fraud, so I need ways to get the most of my bluff, disguise, etc skills, and ways to keep faking the magic and even get out of danger quickly if found out (and those fooled aren't happy), I've read through the Charlatan Handbook though it doesn't really help me for what I'm looking for, so if anyone out there can or will I'd really appreciate it.
thank you

I really like the Chameleon class, though I figure it best I not go into it as I doubt my DM would allow it, and that aside it doesn't entirely fit with my character concept of not having any magic, at all chameleon would count in my opinion.
thank you though

Thanks, but I already read through that, it's not quite enough to help me out, especially once I finish level 5.

Warlock?
If allowed.

Else, I suggest rogue/invisible blad or something like that could help you.

Ur Priest could be good for faking being a cleric but instead of worshiping a god to gain spells, they just steal them. They are a divine spellcasting class with a fast progression (get 9th level spells in 9 levels) that is 10 levels long. It can be entered after 5th level. So they'd gain 9th level spells at 14th level (5+9) if you decide to go that route.

Just 3 or so levels would be cool if your character wants to spend some time faking as a cleric in some temple or whatever. If you go 5 levels in Ur Priest, you can pretend to be someone with 9 Cleric Character Levels (because you'd have 5th level spells). So basically a mid-level Cleric.

And of course, you could go Contemplative for a Bonus Domain and get the Trickery Domain (from the Players' Hand Book) or just use general Cleric spells.

Good luck Big Grin

after checking out the prc i really gotta ask...
WHY?

you get limited amount of limited stuff that looks like you do something but has no effect whatsoever...

you could do sooo much better with other classes like chameleon, urpriest, even trapsmith
factotum or pretty much anything

also:
Diplomancy.
this sentence no verb! and Diplomacy does not allow you to cheat lie or steal so that has nothing to do with anything...

another suggestion is silverkeys prc its dwarf specific or stoneblessed specific ;-) you can operate thiefstools at range and may pass any portals/dimension doors and enter mordakeins magnificen mansion as if you were allowed to.

and if you want to kinda backstab your party id recommend mothercyst feat
gives you new spells which are all enabled by the second level spell that besotws a undead tumor on people from there on you can hurt control detect and instakill them.

infect them when they sleep and everything is up to you from then on you can force anyboddy to do anything.

its hard to help you because i dont really understand what you wish to accomplish.
if you just want to play a pretender someone who has no ablities on his own...

MAYBE: a kensai with item famliar that way your equipment will be much more capable then you

OR :i'd also recommend fiend of possession so that you can manipulate other people and even objects

OR: a thief acrobat / exemplar if you want a burglar/trickser kind of character

OR: thematically maybe you shoud check the master of masks, fortunes friend, uncanny trickser, battle trickser from complete scoundrel
