Talon is a new recruit here, so he doesn't know this guy. In fact, I thought we were all new recruits, except the people/thing we encountered here in the demiplane.

Mugen is the word for "limitless" or "infinite" in Japanese.
Also "dream" or "phantom". Well, that depends on how you write it. Could also be "six illusions". But I'm pretty sure the word for "Phantom" is readed as "Gen'ei". "Mu" is a character that denotes void or absence of something. Perhaps if you used the "gen" of "genjitsu" (reality) it might apply, but it's a pretty awkward reading... Where have you seen that, Prime? Plenty of places. The DS version of Chrono Trigger, for one, adds a new ultimate sword called "Mugen" (90% crit rate!). It was translated as "Dreamseeker". Then there's Unlimited Blade Works - from what I can tell, the Japanese name can be read as "swordmaster of infinity", "without constraint", "illusion becomes truth" or "the power of a dream".

Yeah... I feel kind of like a fish out of water with all the anime references in this game...
So start watching more anime? Go with the times, man.

As a matter of fact, Sabot and Matsuko are the only two who do.

As for the 'watch more anime' thing, I used to watch anime, regularly even. And then I grew out of it. I'm not necessarily against it, but I'm tired of it. The majority of it rehashed a bunch of similar traits and qualities that I am simply sick of. There are a few things I still enjoy and respect, but I'm not mindlessly devoted to japanese animation anymore. I can't identify with 90% or more of it.

Uh, yeah. That's called Sturgeon's Revelation, and it's the same for pretty much everyone and everything. Although I've found that I have a rather high tolerance for the exact things you complained about.

I used to to have a higher tolerance, but over time my tastes changed, along with my willingness to follow certain fandoms blindly. As with many people, I am constantly reinventing myself. I experiment and try new things, and reevaluate the things I've tried before. I used to hate spinach, and now I like it. I used to like progressive rock, and now I don't care for it so much.

If you'd care to tell us Some of the stuff you've watched in the past and things you like now, I'm sure some of us weeaboos would love to suggest shows that you might like. Name a premise, any premise, and there's probably an anime for that (or similar, at least). It's a bit hard to work with something vague like 'a bunch of similar traits and qualities' that get rehashed over and over. It is undeniable that there are a few immensely ubiquitous character types. It's hard to avoid those entirely because they're just that damn common, so what I do is just lean back, smile, and deal with it. Even then, however, you can be assured that there will be subversions, deconstructions, or outright aversions out there.

Honestly right now, I've no interest in discovering new series. I'm currently more interested in western-produced shows, both animation and live action. It's not just character types; deep down, japanese content-producers make characters and stories that are aimed at japanese audiences. Those audiences can identify with what's going on, with certain character traits, societal issues, and story or design elements, because it is not only designed to, but because that's what the creators know. The same way western content is aimed at western audiences. I can identify more with a show like Futurama, or Venture Bros., or even, say, 30 Rock or Battlestar Galactica, because they are largely created with my demographic in mind. A Japanese viewer might not care for those as much as I do (though American and other western content, particularly British, is often fairly popular in other markets. From what I understand, Harry Potter is HUGE in Japan.)
I'm sure you understand this better than I do, since I live in America where it's standard for pretty much only American shows to be on tv, while in Europe besides home-grown content, there's a lot that is either imported and dubbed, or remade natively. Here, almost nothing is imported with dubbing or subtitles, while only a few things get remade for american audiences, and then almost none of those things succeed. If 'The Office' had been shown on our national broadcast networks as the original UK version, it wouldn't have done nearly as well as it has with american audiences. It wouldn't have gotten to the point it is at now (over-staying its welcome, tired, uninspired writing and comedy, etc.). It has been shown, but doesn't reach nearly the same audience. On the otherhand, the US version of 'The IT Crowd' didn't make it past pilot, which is fortunate because it is fairly awful.
Anyway, I don't want to clog this board with all this talk. I shouldn't have written all this out either.

Actually, I find that to be fairly important feedback.
On my side, I actually enjoy anime because let's face it, Brazillian made shows as a rule suck so much dick they might as well legally make themselves into whorehouses. And much of the really good stuff doesn't make it here unless it gets huge (to quote an example, Bleach and Naruto only got here because the fanbase was so damn huge the local entertainment bigwigs couldn't afford to ignore it any longer. Similarly with House and The Big Bang Theory, which are nowadays among Brazillian favorites. Death Note only gets here via cable).
I can understand if it's not your thing. To be frank, I can cite relatively few recent anime that aren't rehashes of tried and true formulas. However, I've come to discover that there are some old but relatively ignored series such as City Hunter that are great in their own right and, despite their age, work for pretty much everyone and everything.
I can throw a suggestion or two your way, but I won't force it.

I counter with the MST3K Mantra: Just lean back, relax, and enjoy the show. Alternatively, maybe I'm just really good or really lucky at finding the 10%.

I don't watch TV at all. I watch a movie every now and then (many of which are not American), and the occasional TV show episode online with my wife. That's about it. I have watched a few old anime series (and liked some of them), but I just don't have time for any of that anymore.

Neither do I. I have lots of unwatched anime.
But whenever I get the time... I work on that.
Knowing other stories, knowing how other people work on a story. That is the way I improve my own storytelling.

Marathoning TV is boring.
