Working on a  character for a campaign.  Level 12.  Haven't actually made an artificer before, so I figured I'd get some advice

Books: Open 3.5, everything else on a per-item basis

Race: I'm thinking lesser mechanatrix.  Electricity healing is fun.

Stat selection: dunno.  Shouldn't matter too much.

Combat: I'm planning on using a lot of potions/wands reflavored as cigars.  Typically of lightning bolt.  Because that's totally awesome.

My mastermaker battlefist is reflavored as a hook.  An awesome pirate hook.  Yaarrr!  And of course, a hidden compartment in the pegleg for a wand.  I plan to be one-eyed and have an eyepatch of true darkness as well.

Build sketch
Artificer 5/Renegade Mastermaker 7 (hey, that's the break point).

I'm considering taking obtain familiarrrr and improved familiarrrrr for an awesome "parrot" and or "monkey" (that is, an imp that stays shaped like a raven or a beguiler) and just using a scroll of elemental familiar to turn it into an air elemental.  What other cool things should I incorporate?

I'm thinking a persistant energy vortex would be cool.

oh, and make the battlefist shaping(is that right? the thing that lets it change to other weapons in the same size catagory). That way you'll have any light weapon you want. and another hand when you need it.

oh, potions are terrible, never use them. eternal wands are better

It can only be attributable to human error.

You need to make yourself an airship or regular ship to fly around in for your pirating. You can do that for cheap with an item of suspension (Shining South), given a caster level of 7 you would only need the item to be once per week which should make it fairly cheap although a minor schema would work well, and a decanter of endless waters. You could literally use any old thing as an airship with that combo. It would be very funny to have a character that would christen a new ship about every week because his ships keep on getting destroyed and he flies around on odd things like carts, statues, and houses.

The party already has a sentient boat, so making into a flying sentient boat would be cool (the campaign is already ongoing).

Is there a set template for mechantrix? IIRC it was listed as a template in FF but it required extrapolation from the sample creature (I ask because I really want to play one XD)

Taking the alchemist savant would be king for crafting potions, unless you don't think the hit to your craft reserve to be worth it. There are some really crazy methods of reducing cost/xp here, so when my boss gets off my ass, I'll find some links.

It's not a template.  It's a planetouched race.

I would suggest a Spare Hand (MoE). After all what self respecting pirate doesn't want an extra hand to hold their rum?

Are there any nasty [Electricity] spells that have effects other than damage? Being denied a saving throw can be unpleasant.

Not that I know of, and I doubt it'll come up.

Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

There's lightning leap which is both a damage and teleportation spell.

Have decided upon making my battlething into a morphing, sizing weapon of legacy.

Have further decided to make weapon of legacy intelligent.

Have further further decided to use a scroll of elemental familiar and UMD four scrolls of planar familiar to have an anarrrrchic celestial axiomatic fiendish arrrrr elemental familiarrrr.

How did I convince it to go through with it?  When it was fiendish I took 20 to convince it that it need the ability to attack chaotic foes as well, when it was axiomatic I convinced it it needed the ability to attack evil foes as well, and when it was celestial I convinced it it needed to attack lawful foes as well.

My cha is higher than its wis, and I have time to take 20.

Well it sounds like your sort of battle fist will be incredibly insane after you are done with that. Also are you sure a sentient weapon is a valid target for those spells?
