Obviously, it'd outlast their entangle and by then we are out of their issue unless they have AoEs big enough to hit the whole area.

Thorden raises a hand at the ogre, and sends a Hail of Stone at his square Z12. To-hit: 7 Damage: 8, creates difficult terrain at that square. I like this spell, overall, even though I totally just missed.
I never actually considered that it would still create rough terrain in a square on a miss. Honestly, even for a first level spell, I'm not sure it's really overpowered. What do you guys think? I think it gives a nice incentive to use an otherwise blast power. Also, given the increased miss chance (attack vs touch attack), it's nice to get something for it. Edit:Also, Flay, I didn't see what mods you used for your attack roll for Hail of Stone, but did you remember that you can substitute your Caster Level for your BAB for that attack roll? It still would have missed, but I put that in to help mitigate the fact that you're not rolling a touch attack. It still likely won't hit as often against many opponents, but at least it stops them from charging.

Ah, apparently I forgot to link to my rolls. It did use caster level, sadly enough.
I thought it didn't make terrain on a miss? I'm not gonna argue for it to not. The reality is, with one square of effecct initially, I suppose it wouldn't be terribly op.

You're right. It doesn't. I didn't read my own damn spell. Okay. I'll remove the terrain, but I'll still say the ogre only moved the 20 feet. I don't want to retcon it too much.

Actually, I dare say keeping it on a miss might be a desirable change to the spell. It's not that strong as it is, and well, why would the rubble care if you hit the target?

Maybe you're right. I don't think it really breaks anything. It's a good counter-charge tactic, and it's not much better than that, other than maybe stopping someone from reaching someone else on a move-action. I'm wondering how well this fight is going to go. I'm worried it may veer into TPK territory simply because of Entangle. If it gets too bad, I apologize up front.

I forgot these guys had reach weapons. That 12 damage hurts. Any more like that and Aepa is going down. I guess I just need to make sure that he can't hit me like that again.

Man, I should have rolled up a druid and used entangle against all the enemies in other encounters, we'd breeze through them. Yeah, the least PC I ran solo with my current DM was a druid. I even went out of my way to not super-optimize (VoP and shapechange ACF), but Entangle was still the bee's knees. It was worse in that he was fairly permissive on when it would and wouldn't work. Basically, if I was above ground, it worked. Even in towns. I kept suggesting ways to nerf the spell so I wouldn't steam-roll encounters, but he didn't want to change it, so I kept using it. Quickened Entangle was probably my best use of a 5th level slot.

I know what you mean. I ran the numbers on a standard MM orc once, and if they fail their first save, they have a 7% chance to make both rolls, assuming a base DC of 14 for the spell.

Just to shoot ideas out there on killing plants for Entangle: Give each five-foot square 5 (maybe 10?) HP, damaged by slashing weapons or fire, or anything else that could make sense.
I'm not sure a good way to handle it. I'm not sure I'm worried about super-realism. If I were to treat it as a swarm, I might allow consecutive attacks with slashing weapons to drop both DCs by 1 or 2 each, even if they don't do HP damage. It's a little more complicated, but I'm not sure.
I'm curious what you think. I hate changing stuff in the middle of the game, so I usually want buy-in from the players if I do so mid game.

Slashing damage shouldn't be as effective as aoe fire, but it also shouldn't be useless...
10hp per square, immune to weapon types other than slashing, half damage from single target attacks, full damage from aoe attacks, double damage from fire?
Should there be any scaling for the health?

I still can't target the plants next to me, nor the ones in my square. Not with my guisarme, at least, and my spiked gauntlet won't work either.

Other than Grizz not being able to take advantage, is everyone cool with this approach? 10hp per square, immune to weapon types other than slashing, half damage from single target attacks, full damage from aoe attacks, double damage from fire?
