Yeah, sorry about that. I think I had you guys surprise on of the bugbears quite a while ago.
How do you want me to set it up? Actual scouting before you know what you're up against? Set up the battle field with you guys at a distance, and have each of you get into position and/or use Hide/Move Silently to close the gap?
I just want to figure out the best way to do this on a PbP so that you feel like it's worth the effort.

i'm not entirely sure for a PbP game. I guess starting at long range or assuming that my guy is scouting ahead of the party and trying to be stealthy and we do opposed checks to see if i notice them before they see me and at what ranges. If it is too much trouble i can just ignore the hide and move silently and focus on something else with the skill points. I was just asking about it before we leveled again and i sank more points in something that may not come into play.

I'm fine with doing stealth/ambush every now and then. If you scout ahead, what would you likely do? Sneak back, warn the others, and then surround them? I'm assuming you wouldn't try to solo the group yourself.
I suppose I could try some weird conditional encounters. Maybe you run into something like one gnoll or bugbear. If he gets off the alarm, half a dozen more come running in two rounds later, or something. At that point, it becomes a skill/Initiative contest, really. Still, it could be interesting. It is a semi-standard part of many games.

yea i figured me one or two hundred feet or so ahead of the part so they can hear if i yell and get to me. That would also put any spot penalties of seeing them high enough that i should be able to notice the enemy before they see the party. I would then report back to them what i saw so we can be prepared.

Ha! I just now realized that you all won initiative. Of course, three of the four guys are zombies, so that's no real surprise. Although the dwarf does have Improved Initiative, but I rolled a natural 1 for him!  At least this isn't 2E Combat & Tactics initiative! |

I want the monsters to behave as normal. crap i just looked at my sheet and realized i haven't been using my faster speed. |
