I played the SNES game a bunch, and really liked it.  Would I need to have any of the books to join?  Infiltrator type sounds fun to me.

Sega game was better.

Adept sounded pretty cool. If no one else was going with that, I would have rolled one up.

The other types sound nifty as well, though. Gotta take a look into my options. Is there much difference in character creation based on Edition? I would assume so. I guess I can just take a look at whatever I can get my hands on until it's set.

Well, I was interested in a thug, till everyone started talking about magic fists. I'm gonna have to check the rulebook.

Is magic as big a seperation in SR as it is in DND? (As in, does someone with 17 magic points instantly beat anyone else around, unless they also have 17 magic points?)

So far, what interests me is probably gonna be either a 'street samurai' or a Mage.

Anyway, lets make a tally:

Generic PC
Nanshork
Kari
tallan
VennDygrem
j0lt
Kuroimaken
JaronK potentially

Thats 6, and a DM. Potentially JK, assuming he can stop being lazy and check his computer once a day.

Apparently, interest was there. So, of those 7(/8), how many would prefer 3e, and how many would prefer 4e? Our elected (by my DIVINE MANDATE!) DM has decided to sit on the fence, despite being the only person who apparently has actual RPG experience. (By the looks of it, we have Nanshork, myself, tallan, j0lt without books. I'm not sure if Venn has books either, but I'd wager a no, if he hasn't played the edition. Maybe it'll be time to turn to the... torrents. GASP!)

I think, Kari, that you could probably start coming up with a campaign, unless you've changed your mind and want to guilt-trip a SR DM into showing up.

To go onto a tangent, I checked out a myth-weavers SR character sheet... it looks really long. it has like 28 different sections. (I exaggerate. 21, I counted, not including stat block and background, private notes or personality notes. And, not every single one will be used for every character, I'm sure.)

EDIT: I just re-read this, and realized I sound very pushy. I'm not changing it, but I will say that I'm being sarcastic Kari. You don't have to DM. Also JaronK, Sarcasm in the line about the computer checking.

Don't worry. My sarcasm detector is excellent. I detected it. Tongue

To answer the question about the magic/non-magic divide, an Awakened (someone who has magic) doesn't automatically win. Neither does the Troll with the Panther Assault Cannon. It's all about tactics, and some luck.

Venn, there's a BIG difference between 3rd and 4th, and even more since I don't use standard 3e creation rules (I hate the priority system - if we go with 3e, I'll be providing everyone with a copy of the character creator I use... and we'll be creating using the Becks Karma system. 4e will be done via the standard rules, although I might make it 500 bp instead of 400.)

So we have a Street Sam, a mage/shaman type(?), an infiltrator, an adept (who specializes in Killing Hands, it seems). Anyone else have any thoughts on what they want?

Also. I CAN provide assistance in books. Both in creation (via IMs would be best), but I also have the pdfs for temporary usage of others. I would just have to stress that it would be temporary, and unless people are willing to buy the books, you shouldn't keep them. I will also put my abilities at optimizing for SR at everyone's disposal. I'm reasonably good at it, although I'm sure the folks over at Dumpshock could wipe the floor with me.

Also, with either edition, there will be some house rules that I'd use, but I'll save that until we have an idea of which edition we'll be using.

I think I might have some 3rd edition PDFs lying around, as well as 4th edition. (No, I'm not ashamed to own the PDFs, basically because they never made it here and there isn't a single import bookstore in my town that will bring them. Le Sigh.)

I even have a character concept lying around. Which city will this be taking place in?  Big Grin

I was thinking either of a sort of street shaman who communes with the spirits of the city and uses them as tools, guidance, what-have-you, or possibly a more directly damaging spellcaster. Maybe a character akin to 'the Sphinx' from Mystery Men (A wise sage who is "terribly mysterious. Plus he can, like, cut guns in half with his mind.")

My university library has some shadowrun books, as does one of my roommates. He's got the 20th anniversary edition book, I guess, which says it's compatible with 4th edition. So that's what I was flipping through last night. *shrug*

I think Mage looks the best. Also, if we do 3e, apparently we have a character creator provided?

I found a copy of 4e and am reading through the character creation section. So far, and adept troll living on the streets sounds like fun. Something akin to a walking biomech.

Just so you know, Venn, Shamans and Mages can use pretty much every spell. Even a shaman can dish out the direct damage disasters of doom. Smile

Kari, which edition would you prefer that we use, since you're officially the designated DM?   Tongue

Also, FYI, I'm planning on being fully decked out in Cyberware.  And I mean fully, as much as possible.

Oh, and I have a question because I didn't see anything about it as I rummaged around.  If I buy a piece of cyberware, and then upgrade it (either in ranks or for a better version that costs less essence, yes I've been reading 4E books but can easily start reading 3E and probably will once I get my hands on some, sorry I'll stop rambling now), what do I do with the old one?  Does it get thrown away or do I sell it or what?

Well, once Kari chooses an edition, I'll find me some books.

(I might have to take you up on that PDF offer. I can't find anyone who has the core book, and I make a run to the store for a bit, since my car is out of order.)

Used cyberware can be sold. In fact, some of the more gruesome runners make extra cash on the side by cutting 'ware out of victims/guards/whatever and selling it. (It's worth noting that if you upgrade your current cyberware to a better grade, you do NOT get your Essence refunded - you just have a hole that will be filled up first before you lose more Essence.)

As for which Edition I prefer, in some ways I'm partial to 3E - but I like 4E as well. I'm hopeless that way. I will say this - I know 3E a lot better, and much more thoroughly, as I've never read through or played with a lot of the expansions for 4E.

Looks like 3e is the way to go then. Way to be impartial. Thus, someone made a decision.

Anyone vehemently opposed to 3e?

i don't know much about either so i don't mind. Will have to look over either one anyway. I do like the troll adept idea, but if it doesn't fit the group I can do something else. I'd rather be a useful member of a team than just a big cool thing.

I've got no problem going with 3e.

As for the spells, I was aware, but the decision will be primarily concept-driven.

Tallen: Generally, almost any set of characters can be worked together. A troll adept isn't so wacky as to prevent it (as a matter of fact, my own first character was a Troll Adept.)

Venn: Okay, I just wanted to make sure.

I'll wait until everyone can chime in - but if 3E's it, then that's fine.

Alternately, a Human dude+gun and cyber implants.

I'm fine with 3E.  So, just to confirm what you're saying, if I lose 1 essence and then get that cyberware upgraded to a version that costs .8 essence, I don't get the .2 essence back to my pool but it still counts as "free" and thus I could implant a piece of cyberware that costs .2 essence without losing any more of my total?
