If an evil deity's #1 evil cleric was redeemed into a good person, and then sent away to another plane of existance so that deity couldn't befoul him anymore, is it possible to make a "clone" of the cleric (not necessarily a clone itself mind you) with all of it's memories intact, etc? Like, maybe make it a ritual and use a combination of spells like clone and wishes, and whatever spells that'd be necessary to bring this into reality. Or, do I have to homebrew this whole thing?

I know there are storylines in old cartoons that have something done along these lines, but those kinds of mechanics aren't really in the D&D universe. At least not that I can see.

See this is the story. A chaotic evil deity has finally come up with a plan to overthrow all of the good deities, but he needs his servant to do most of the work in the realm so that the other deities don't get suspicious. Along the way, a group of adventurers screw up the whole thing by defeating the cleric outright, just before the plan came about. The chaotic evil deity, who was once a greater god, is found out and stripped of his greater powers and becomes a lesser god. Seeking revenge against both the adventurers (and their decendants), and the deities that took his abilities, he decides to re-create his #1 messanger again, but better and more powerful, and have him gain evil allies who are also under his power. Not only that, but the messanger has all of his previous memories intact, and knows exactly what what he must do to complete his original mission.

In enter the new adventurers 300 years later, to try and stop this all from happening again. Along the way, they encounter the original cleric that had been sent away. He wishes to completely redeem himself (besides the redemption wish that had been used on him), and try help take down his old god.

Who's making the clone?  Would this entity know the memories?  If you're looking to do it with existing means, the Modify Memrory spell might be of some use, although it only works for five minutes a time, so creating a lifetime of memories would take forever.  Also, it's Bard only.

As for creating the clone, the Similacrum spell would work, but it's Wizard/Sorcerer only.

Any way you slice it, this will involve some amount of home-brewing.  Throwing Wish/Miracle into the works fixes everything, as you can get pretty creative with those spells.

@Kevin: So, I guess you really want your deity to be using real and available mechanics in the creation of this clone? Otherwise, I would just say, "he's a deity, of course he can do that."

@Robby: You realize that Gods can cast arcane spells. It's not as if Gods can't be arcane spellcasters. Also, as you said, Wish/Miracle should be able to duplicate the effects of Simulacrum no problem.

Of course, Simulacrum won't be of any use at all however, since the clone is merely a puppet and at half the strength of the original creature, rather than being stronger like Kevin wanted. I don't normally like the Epic Level Handbook, but for this very occasion, and since it is a Deity, it does offer the Eidolon spell. A minorly tweaked variant of this spell would allow the Deity to create a clone of the Cleric, make it permanent, and accept any number of negative levels in order to give the clone extra levels in return. The spell would likely require a decently long cast time to make up for the outrageous cost of making it permanent, and it must carry the caveat that the deity, although normally immune to negative levels, is not immune to negative levels specifically bestowed by the spell. As far as the memories are concerned, I think that spell already takes care of everything, but if not, I'd say that's nothing a single Miracle can't cure.

Well see the problem is that there's a clone spell that exists in another d20 book that I'd been reading, and that's what gave me my idea. Then I came to D&D and saw that their clone spell was completely different. See, with the other book, you don't even need the soul. The person just has to "die" and the clone activates. If you've ever seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it's kind of like that. Buffy "died" in the first season, but was brought back because she'd only drowned. However, another slayer was called anyways, and so on, and so forth. That's how that clone worked. Also, there were no negative levels. The clone was just 1/2 the levels that the original was, and had a pair of tiny dots on their forehead (usually hidden with a headband) to represent that they weren't the original. They could also gain levels as per normal, and even be capable of surpassing the original's power if they worked at it hard enough.

I have to admit that the idea of "he's a deity, he can do it" did go through my head, but I thought it'd be kind of cheating going that route. Be like Lucy Lawless saying "A wizard did it" to all the flaws that happened in her show, when she got asked in that Simpson's Halloween special. Just didn't want it to be a copout.

I guess I could always use the other clone spell, and make it into an Epic spell, then use a load of Wishes and Miracles to make the cleric more powerful. I'll have to look at Modify Memory, and Eidolon. Never seen those before.

You could try a custom, permanent Fission effect item, a Helm of Opposite Alignment, and Mind Rape.
