In August, some friends and I are going to be taking a road trip. Thumb
We're leaving from South Carolina, and 7 days later, we're going to be in Indianapolis for Gen Con.

What I'm looking for is "places we should go" or "things we should see/do".
We're sticking primarily to the eastern half of the US (and likely Canada), but anything awesomely exciting might be able to entice us westward.

So, where should we go? Shrug

This might sound way too plain and I have only been to the States twice, but Niagara falls really impressed me. Seeing those can definitely be worth it.

If we end up going to Canada, we're absolutely checking out Niagra Falls, good suggestion.

There's a place in Pennsylvania that makes a B-I-G A-S-S hamburger.  If you were coming from SC, you would be remiss in not visiting Washington DC.

1452 Woodland Rd Clearfield, PA

From that site, it would be a pretty short trip to Cleveland to see the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I was at my cousin's graduation and after that we had a nice trip there and it was definitely worth seeing. Then again, if you have seen another huge waterfall, it won't be quite as impressive. Pretty much the same way both Chicago and New York were so awesome; I had never been to a skyscraper city before, so the sheer magnitude was extremely fascinating...

Out of sheer envy, I second this.

DC was actually already on our list of things to see, but it's nice to know that it's not considered a terrible idea.

A BIG ASS hamburger huh?  and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to boot?  I'll definitely have to propose this to my friends.

Right now, the only place we're really avoiding is New York City.

Why would you avoid the greatest city in America? Smile

Yeah - the biggest burger they have is something like 12lbs.  Twelve POUNDS.  Not OUNCES.  So it's a bring friends kind of thing.  They have a 2lb burger (which is a feat in-and-of-itself - biggest burger I ever downed was 1 lb) for those of us not in the competitive eating world.

Christ!  12 lbs?  Really?

Oh dammit.  As soon as I tell them that, we're going to make that stop for sure.
And then we're all going to be ill.

We figure that comparatively, the time we'll have to waste getting into, out of, and through New York will not be worth the things we see or do there.
Plus, most of us are cowards and nerds, and we don't want to be mugged.

I'm nerd, and I grew up in NYC - I turned out fine.  Sort of.

I, personally, would be willing to visit, if only to meet you and your friends.
Unfortunately, my friends aren't really involved with 339 or BG and as such, don't really know how cool it could be.

I'll just have to meet you at Gen Con.

I _suppose_ that'll have to do.  Smile Don't live in NY anymore though.

While you're in Ohio, if you're a fan of airplanes and stuff, you should try the museum @ Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

I know it's not really in the east at all, but camping in Yellowstone National Park is freakin' awesome!  Aside from that, you really ought to stop by Philadelphia for a cheesesteak!

Airplanes huh?  I'm just going to have to link them to this thread or something.

And if you go to Wright Pat, make sure to go to nearby Fairborn and check out the Bookery

If you make it into Columbus Ohio, try the Book Loft

It has 32 rooms
Its more like a labyrinth than a book store

Another cool idea is Crater of Diamonds Arkansas State Park - you pay a fee and you can prospect for diamonds.  Keep whatever you find.

http://www.arkansas.com/things-to-do/diamond-hunting/

That does take you in a different direction from the PA-OH thing I seem to have started you on.  If you're going to Arkansas, you can then try St. Louis where I believe you can take a tour of the Budweiser brewery.  I know, it's Bud - who cares?  CHEAP BEER!

the wright pat museum is cooler than it is huge and its three? hangers.

you could come by here, but it really the last place on earth anyone really wants to see..

we have a fairly boring 'serpent mound' in southern ohio, about an hour north of me...

fort benning ga, has an excellent war museum.

Don't worry about sending us North.  Our current plans have us running straight up the east coast.  The initial concept of the road trip was going up north, I just shanghaied it into ending at Gen Con.

If people want to offer us a place to stay for a night, we'll totally stop by. Thumb Bow

If you're going to St Louis for the brewery, take in the Arch and catch a Cardinals game if you can. If you're headed into Chicago they you can always try out The Ledge.
