I settled back against the rock I was using to prop myself up. It wasn't comfortable, but then again neither was the train. I closed my eyes, as I listened to the harmonica. I wondered if the jumping bastard was out there nearby, listening as well...

Jackson stands up, pulls his bedroll down from his horse and lays it out a few feet from the fire.

Night has fallen.  Please use this time to arrange a watch, set up camp, or do whatever you have to do to make it through the night.

"I'll take first watch". If anything was going to happen, chances are it would be much later. Perhaps it would be best for one of these others to be on guard then...

"I'll take second watch then." Frank replies as he gets his bedroll ready near the fire.

How long are watches?

"Wake me when you need someone else to keep watch," the doctor says, suppressing a yawn and trying to find a relatively comfortable spot on the ground.

"I guess I'll take the next one after doc..." Cedric shrugs while setting up his own bedroll.

"Well, I reckon I'll get you up in about 2 or so hours, Frank." I said opening my King James Bible. Perhaps it would help pass the time if I read by the camp fire. "I'll be sure to scream as loud as I can if I'm slain. As a courtesy, of course. Good night." I smiled.

"You just do that preacher, I might be able to catch your last breathing moments." Frank smirks.

"Say, you got a gun or any other way to defend yourself? Just in case..."

"What? Have you no faith for The Lord's love of his flock?" I say, but I brandish my revolver, a Colt Thunderer to allay Frank's concerns. These were dangerous times, and I often have needed to travel through dangerous places.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I fear no evil, for thou art with me.
My Colt and my flask they comfort me.

"No offense to your religion, shepherd, but sometimes you need more than faith to stay alive." Frank replies, not wanting to insult the preacher, but wanting to stress his point nonetheless.

The bible was open, but I wasn't reading it at the moment. I sat upon a rock, and I kept my ears focused on hearing any sounds that may come from outside of the camp. There could be coyotes or murderous jumping men. I shivered. It wasn't due to the night's chill. I looked around, peering into the darkness from time to time. My hand was on my pistol grip.

As Frank had taken up position on the same rock the preacher was sitting on not too long ago, he gazed into the distance, in the direction the tracks lead, just in case he might see something.

About 40 minutes into his watch he suddenly hears something, gunshots!

He slides down the side of the rock and wakes the rest of the men.

"Sorry to interrupt a good night's rest gentlemen, but there's been some shooting over in the distance. I figured you lot might like to know."

Bones sits upright, instinctively reaching for the pack he was using as a pillow. "What? Gunshots? How many, where, and are they still firing?"

"2 or 3 of them, just 10 seconds ago, down that way." Frank says as he points to where the gunshots came from.

"wha- What's going on?" I sputtered. It felt like I had JUST fallen asleep. Cobwebs of sleep still hung in my brain. Something about gunshots...

Cedric nearly rolls over and goes back to sleep before the gravity of the situation hits him and he springs up, "Gunwhat? Damnit..." He rubs his eyes once and gathers his rifle and ammunition - each having a place beside him.

As you all try to shake the sleep from your minds, a yellow-orange light can be seen growing in the distance from the same direction as the gunshots came from.

"What the hell...?" a drowsy Cedric mutters as he squints to see the light better, the cogs in his head slowly beginning to turn.
