This is where all the banter and such goes.

As a side note, any preference on a rolled ability array or point buy?

well from the looks of it you guys may as well count me out. the game started w/o me realizing it (my bad) and when i did realize it, it was a time when i was home for an hour a day for two weeks. I guess it would be awkward for me to come in when the game is well underway. If you guys are ok with me suddenly appearing then I will finish my equipment and join in, but other wise i'll just keep my character for the next game.

No, there's a way to work you in, don't worry. Finish your equipment, and I'll insert you where it'd be convenient.

(As a side note, I spelled that as Finnish originally. I blame Tshern.)

Andy, did you fix your characters level? It is supposed to start at 10 and alot of your sheet isn't filled in like the Base attack Bonus. Any of us can help you with it when you get on IRC.

Quick note here, but I'm probably going to be posting slightly less often for the next six weeks or so as I'll be at Governor's School. I'll try to maintain at least 1-2 posts a day (assuming the network lets me through).

We decided to just show you how combat works first, I never see you in IRC so I can't coach you, so here is....
The Basics of DND combat:
1. Initiative roll

The initiative roll determines the characters initiative for the battle, who is most driven to act. Basically, it determines the order of who goes first, second, third and on. The initiative roll is 1d20+ your initiative modifier, it is not purely based on your initiative modifier. There is one initiative roll in every encounter (battle) and that roll generally stays consistent throughout the encounter.

Caveats: Anyone can vouluntarily lower their initiative so they act after another character. The initiative they lower too becomes their new initiative forever.

2. Combat-Melee/Ranged
Melee combat uses two rolls: The Attack roll and the Damage roll
The attack roll is 1d20+total base attack bonus. Total base attack bonus is your base attack bonus (determined by class levels) and either strength mod for a melee weapon or your dex mod for a ranged weapon. Your total attack bonus also includes any extraneous numbers like magical enhancements, flanking bonuses and ranged penalties. If your Attack roll is higher than the creature you are attacking's armour class, your attack hits and most likely will deal damage.

Damage roll:
After a successful attack roll:
Roll the dice that are listed for the weapon you are attacking with. Note that 2d4 is not equivalent to 1d8, though they both have the same maximum damage, they do not have the same minimum damage.
With a melee roll, add half of your str mod (round down) to a offhand weapon (Like a short sword if you were duel weilding a short sword and long sword), add your full str mod to a normally held weapon, and add one and a half of your str mod to a weapon held with two hands. DO NOT add anything to a ranged weapons damage.

3. Magic combat uses a variety of rolls based on the spells. Basically, helpful spells (buffs) cast on yourself and your party will not need an attack roll, because your party will not be trying to avoid the spell. Spells cast on enemies will sometimes use the formula of 10+casterlvl+ability mod (Your ability modifier would be wisdom, that is the ability that pertains to paladin spell casting). Depending on the spell it may bypass armour, making it a touch attack or a ranged touch attack.
4. Skill checks are simple, 1d20+ranks in skill+abilitymod

While you're at it, we need your Listen check. As Ari indicated, it's 1d20+your Wisdom modifier+any skill ranks in Listen you may have.
