Alright, here's the deal. I have just about had it with the resource-hogging behemoth that is the Windows OS. I'm running 32-bit Vista Home Premium right now, and frankly I'm tired of Windows in general. Soooooo.........
I have begun seriously considering switching to Linux. I have no experience with it in any way though, so I am seeking out all the advice I can get. I've found some really helpful articles online, I've got a friend who knows a ton about the sort of concerns I might have, but I could always use more good advice before I make my decisions.
Thanks in advance.

Well, Windows 7 is supposedly a lot better... I'm not trying to defend Microsoft or anything, but it's got tech-guys excited.

Linux is a powerful OS, but you really need to try it first. The pros are that they are stable (no crushes), safe (no need for firewalls and antivirus), fast and customizable to the extreme. The cons are that, well, linux is not for everyone. And i don't mean that there are advanced techy stuff that will freak you out, because there aren't any. You will have to use the terminal of course, but the chance of not finding a step-by-step tutorial is minimal.

Keep in mind a few other things:
1. Everything will work with Linux, it's just a matter of how hard you want to work for it. Things like printers, flash drives, and stuff should be easy, just plug it in and Linux will figure things out. Things like games and software can work, but you'll need to play with them. Things like Modems and other things have proprietary drivers and it's very hard to get them to work, but not impossible. Certain things are designed to not work in Linux in any way, no one that I am aware of has made an iPod work with Linux because Apple doesn't like Linux and people that use it.

Ubuntu is the "safe" one, right? All linux distributions should be safe. Nobody bothers to make malicious programs for them.

Really not true. Printers/flash drives/etc. are pieces of cake nowadays (thank GOD because they weren't always like that). Older games and software, you probably have a 50/50 shot at running with Wine. Newer games and software you can straight-up forget about. Dial-up is getting pretty obsolete, so fortunately you don't have to worry about that headache called the winmodem anymore. Some onboard ethernet ports on motherboards can be problematic if the motherboard is new, but even slightly old ones generally have drivers. iPods do work in Linux, they are just flash drives with some special software onboard. The only software I'm particularly attached to is my copy of Adobe CS3, which I paid a fuck-ton of money for, so dammit I'm going to use THAT. anything else really is replaceable. Office, iTunes, (I do have an iPod, but I'm not above voiding my warranty, since it was a gift) all that type of software is replaceable, and Mozilla is sent straight from God, (i.e. open source) so I know I won't have any problems with that.
I was checking out Wine, and I noticed that CS3 is not particularly highly rated in terms of reliability on Linux. In all honesty, that alone might be enough for me to set up a Windows partition to run Adobe on, but if can avoid that, I would like to. (Seriously, that shit was EXPENSIVE. It was my graduation present to myself. Even with a college student discount it ran me like $500.)
How worried should I be about my hardware not liking Linux? I know nVidia is cool, so I don't have to worry about my graphics card, but what other pitfalls might there be?
Thanks for the advice so far, and by all means keep it coming.

That's old info. The newest generation of iPods don't work with Linux. You'll need to find some way to purge the software in the iPod to do it now, I know people have managed to do so with a Zune. The software in the current generations of iPods is designed to SPECIFICALLY not work with Linux. Also, the rest of your post agrees with what I say, not contradict it. It really irritates me when someone says I'm wrong, then says the exact same thing I did.

What I really disagreed with there was "Things like games and software can work, but you'll need to play with them." And the iPod thing, but I didn't know that new iPods wouldn't work. iPods suck anyway.

Actually, you disagreed that you need to play with games to play them, then you admitted that you needed to play with games. You disagreed then said roughly what I said.
Anyhow, there are ways to hack iPods to work now, all of which void your warranty.

Well, thanks to everyone who gave me advice. I installed Ununtu 8.10 on Sunday, and she's running like a charm. I have had no problems at all, and everything is fast and smooth. I even have my iPod working properly, and I didn't even have to hack it.
Thanks again for all the advice.
