Anime is like rock, dude. It's impossible to hate all of it, you'll wind up finding some offshoot variation you end up liking.

i just finished episode 1 of Death Note. not bad...

if i go back to work soon, i may take it out to watch there.
I'm not a big anime fan in general, but I do like Berzerk. How can you ask more from an opening scene than the "hero" being born from his dead mother, who is hanging by the neck from a tree on a battlefield? Big Grin

A note: The episodes after 25 are generally (so far as I've seen) to be inferior to the series up to that point. A sharp drop-off in intelligence is the main culprit, but for me it also didn't help to have one of the worst intro songs I've heard.

I am not one for anime. I just never could understand why one would like it, but the concept of Deathnote intrigues me, and I might just have to check it out.

On a side note, anyone notice that mozilla says anime is spelled wrong?

Animation is a medium, and as such, the only valid complaint about it is stylization.  There are some animators that I don't particularly like, and there are some that I love (Hayao Miyazaki is amazing).  But as a genre...it's not one, so one cannot dismiss the whole just because suck like Naruto exists and is popular.  I could point out popular love action things that suck as well, but that does not mean that the entire medium sucks.  Personally, I only like what is good.  Some anime that I do watch and like: Monster, the first half of Death Note (the second half sucks, and it's not just the opening music), Ghost in the Shell (especially Stand Alone Complex), Azumanga Daioh, Cowboy Bebop, the remake of Negima, Studio Ghibli movies, Samurai Seven (Akira Kurosawa directed it, and it's basically a show based on his epic Seven Samurai), Paranoia Agent, Wolf's Rain, and Trigun.

As a side note, anime is a stylization of the medium of animation.  It came about because it is simple and yet still holds much of the communication value (at least, many animators can) as even live action.  The way to go about making a great animated film is different than live action, as you can do some new things with it and yet not do some things with it.  That line is being blurred recently, what with the leaps in computer augmentation and practical effects happening, and with the animation becoming more sophisticated, but the way one goes about creating an animated film is different, and requires a different paradigm to view.

You might enjoy the first Gundam series, methinks. In spite of it being so very old (1979... though I like Lupin III, too, which is older, so meh), it remains a very interesting story, with very believable characters. It is also, in my opinion, something a World War buff might enjoy watching... There are just a lot of similarities between the Zeon guys and the germans (and Char is quite inspired off Red Baron, soooooo)...

I don't like or dislike anything for being anime. I have seen some I hate and some I really like. I don't watch much tv at all but Cowboy Bebop would be up there with both Stargate series and Firefly in my list.

What genre do you enjoy a lot?  I could probably suggest something a little more geared towards your taste.  In my list above I have a little bit of everything.  I've got more though.  I don't shy away from most genres.  The only things I don't watch are chick flicks, guy flicks (both of them for the same reason: they are by definition not made as art, but for money, if there is a chick flick or guy flick worth watching, it is not really a chick or guy flick), most horror (again, same reason, there's no real art involved, and I don't see much point in scaring yourself....not that most horror movies today are scary, even (torture porn=/=good movie, or scary even)), and things along those lines.

I'm a huge fan of certain particular anime, but there's plenty of stuff I could do without.  But I can say that about every film genre.

Code Geass might hold your attention longer - it's like Death Note, but with more explosions. Oh, and a few episodes in, the "Light" of the series decides that criminals are a cowardly, superstitious lot...

Don't give up on Death Note just yet, though.

As a general rule, most stuff you find in anime form are better in manga. Notable exceptions being series like Fullmetal Alchemist.

Oh, and one anime that seldom gets mentioned: Fate/Stay Night. I find it to be really interesting, though I wouldn't know how to classify it. Shingetsutan Tsukihime is very good too.

Oh, and one anime that seldom gets mentioned: Fate/Stay Night. I find it to be really interesting, though I wouldn't know how to classify it. Shingetsutan Tsukihime is very good too.

Fate/stay Night is one of my favourite anime too - I would describe it as "Shaman King for grown-ups" (not that it means much to anyone who hasn't seen Shaman King). I haven't seen it, but from what I hear, the Tsukihime anime took massive liberties with the plot of the game and is disowned by many fans.

Note: the games they're based on were essentially electronic novels. With porn in them. The anime took the porn out. Then they made another version of the FSN game (Réalta Nua, which is Irish for "(A) New Star") with voice acting and no porn.

Also, the FSN game had 3 routes: Fate ("the story of a child holding on to his ideals"), Unlimited Blade Works ("the story of ideals tempered by maturity") and Heaven's Feel ("the story of a man with no choice but to grow up"). The anime is based on the first and the manga is based on the second. The third is rather... different.

One thing is enough to make the anime awesome (heck, it literally defined the word GAR):
I am the bone of my sword.
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood.
I have created over a thousand blades.
Unknown to death,
Nor known to life.
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
And yet, these hands will never hold anything.
So, as I pray...
Unlimited blade works.

You mentioned Robotech, ewww...

Boo-urns to that!  While the Macross portion is inherently superior to the rest of the crap that Carl Macek tacked on to make it fit into the North American series format, it got me into anime in the first place!
I probably hate most anime.  Don't even put me into the same room as Neon Genesis Evangelishit, the angsty (read psychologically damaged) teen/mecha pilot angle just makes my brain want to die.

Macross =/= Robotech. Trust me.

Funny thing about that, is the story line they used in the Robotech version of Macross actually made more sense.  I've been watching the original Macross version without subtitles, and there are parts of it which just seem to have been randomly dropped in for no apparent reason.

er, to correct my rant..

i did say robotech.. i meant mechwarrior.. i always confuse them.. shift robo to the 'do not want' section.

That's because Mechwarrior ripped a bunch of designs off Macross.  A lot of people make that mistake (mostly battletech fans).

the HOLY Grail of anime : Akira.. bah it sucks..

You watched it in English, didn't you?  Part of the reason a lot of anime "doesn't make sense" is the cultural issue.  Some aspects of foreign culture are just impossible to explain or translate, so many anime videos are chopped up in a poor attempt to avoid confusion.  Unfortunately, many things that are cut relate to the story, thus creating even more confusion.

Watching an English dubbed anime is like watching the PG rated version of a horror movie instead of the unrated version.
