Oh, and one anime that seldom gets mentioned: Fate/Stay Night. I find it to be really interesting, though I wouldn't know how to classify it. Shingetsutan Tsukihime is very good too. Fate/stay Night is one of my favourite anime too - I would describe it as "Shaman King for grown-ups" (not that it means much to anyone who hasn't seen Shaman King). I haven't seen it, but from what I hear, the Tsukihime anime took massive liberties with the plot of the game and is disowned by many fans. Note: the games they're based on were essentially electronic novels. With porn in them. The anime took the porn out. Then they made another version of the FSN game ( Réalta Nua, which is Irish for "(A) New Star") with voice acting and no porn. Also, the FSN game had 3 routes: Fate ("the story of a child holding on to his ideals"), Unlimited Blade Works ("the story of ideals tempered by maturity") and Heaven's Feel ("the story of a man with no choice but to grow up"). The anime is based on the first and the manga is based on the second. The third is rather... different. Y'know, despite the lack of an ending, the Shaman King manga is quite a bit more "grown-up" than the anime. Heck, CHOCOLOVE of all people is betrayed as a merciless killer who voluntarily blinds himself to pay for his crimes. Towards the end, it actually reminds me a bit of D&D because people die and ressurrect all the friggin' time (and actually become stronger for it too). Also, just as a poke. Fix'd. Boo-urns to that! While the Macross portion is inherently superior to the rest of the crap that Carl Macek tacked on to make it fit into the North American series format, it got me into anime in the first place! It was my first anime, when I was 5, along with Superbook. That doesn't make it good. Acceptable for when I was 5 years old, but not now (remember, childhood tends to do wonders for how good animation looks. I used to remember Street Fighter II Victory as being abso-freaking-lutely awesome where animation is concerned. Recently, having had a chance to look it over again, I can see it actually sucked quite a bit). I probably hate most anime. Don't even put me into the same room as Neon Genesis Evangelishit, the angsty (read psychologically damaged) teen/mecha pilot angle just makes my brain want to die. I've said it once and I'll say it again, Evangelion is a lot it or hate it thing. Then again, so is 85% of Gainax's anime.

Can't argue with that! Every time I go to one of the local electronics stores here, I avoid the "plastic models" section because there's always a life-sized vinyl Rei Ayanami with a schoolgirl uniform in there somewhere that just creeps the hell outta me!

You mentioned Robotech, ewww...
You watched it in English, didn't you? Part of the reason a lot of anime "doesn't make sense" is the cultural issue. Some aspects of foreign culture are just impossible to explain or translate, so many anime videos are chopped up in a poor attempt to avoid confusion. Unfortunately, many things that are cut relate to the story, thus creating even more confusion. Watching an English dubbed anime is like watching the PG rated version of a horror movie instead of the unrated version. i saw a few minutes... it lost me quick.

Either way, althpersona, if you like D&D style fantasy, you need to watch Record of Lodoss War. FIRST SERIES ONLY!!! If you get it and the main character is some dumbass with blue hair, don't waste your time! The original series is basically an anime retelling of the director's D&D campaign, and is easily one of the best fantasy animes out there.

Slayers (dubbed as The Slayers), which I am currently watching, is also based on D&D. (Sequel series are Slayers NEXT, Slayers Try, Slayers Revolution and Slayers Evolution-R). I suspect Eight-Bit Theatre was influenced by it.

Well, I wouldn't say Black Mage is exactly Lina Inverse...

I've said it once and I'll say it again, Evangelion is a lot it or hate it thing. Then again, so is 85% of Gainax's anime. I hated Evangalion. Just. So. Boring. And predictable. And all it is about is a kid trying to get laid. Also Gainax: FLCL. Freaking. Amazing. And Mahoromatic. The ending makes no sense, but the first half is pretty good. ONe I left off my last list was Last Exile. That one is also freaking amazing. And Scrapped Princess. It started off as something fairly stereotypical, but turned into a pretty dang good series. Surprisingly so. Yay for magitech! It also inspired a bit of my magic system I'm working on.

And Mahoromatic. The ending makes no sense, but the first half is pretty good. Gainax traditionally makes every last episode something that looks straight out of a bad acid trip, mostly.

It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. At 2:15, it begins rolling up characters."
"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~" -Ibuki Suika, on overkill

Well, I wouldn't say Black Mage is exactly Lina Inverse... What about Fighter, though? And because it bears repeating: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a Gainax show which appears to have been made in reverse (it has an odd start, then substitutes all the weirdness for the Rule of Cool turned up to eleven). There is also a rumour that 40% of the animation budget was used on the final episode. Just so people would know what kind of show it was, the ad for the dub said "The makers of Evangelion join forces with the creators of FLCL!"

It should be noted the of the last two (Revolution and Evolution-R) the first only just finished airing, and the last one hasn't even STARTED airing yet (I think it starts late this month?) So you won't find these in the US, yet. Well, you might be able to find a fansub online, but don't hold your breath. Also, the subtitles are better - th jokes actually work better a lot of the time. (The voice acting quality's fine in the dub, surprisingly.)

All of Hayao Miyazaki's films are good even if they're childish. Billy Crystal doing the english dubs for Calcifer in 'Howl's Moving Castle' was awesome. The mini-series 'Paranoia Agent' is pretty sweet. I hear a lot of people that hate anime say that they can stand 'Akira'. I guess because it's bad-ass. Often, anime can be just plain annoying. But there are so many, I imagine there is probably an anime out there for everyone.
