Within the last of the chests that Thraxis pries open is a small ledger, written in unfamiliar hand and in an old and mystic script. Perhaps if he could understand it better, he would know what has happened here.
There are several tunnels branching off from this farming chamber, some with paved stone floors and hewn rock tunnels, others of more natural or more crude origin.

Ferrus takes a peek at it to see if the language is anything he knows, or perhaps it's alphabet.

The alphabet bears some small resemblance to one that he knows, but many of the letters are warped, or written in blocky form. Others make no sense at all.

Thraxis says "Well, I'm glad I decided to open a few more. I'll keep opening them. Maybe we'll find something else of interest." Thraxis then proceeds to methodically open all the chests.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?
Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

Thraxis finds several more ledgers, clumped together in the bottom of a chest next to a desk, and wedged under clothing and other small items in another, what appears to be a diary, written in a plain hand.

Perhaps we should explore some of the chambers leading out from this one, since we seem to have covered everything here.

A week passed as the three scientists poured over the documents and explored the various surrounding fields and farms. Little had been learned, but they had begun to slowly decipher the language of the ancient Liarans. It bore some similarities to celestial tongues, and lead to speculation that the populace may once have been angelic in origin. Those reports that they had gathered seemed to speak mainly of crops and the harvest, numbers that suggested a populace of over 10,000 people, if they had eaten as humans do. Still, there had been no bodies, no sign of the ephemeral Liarans.
Satisfied that they had learned all that was possible from the outskirts of the city, the three heroes made their way inwards, searching for signs of habitation and culture. Two more days journey, along corridors marked with magical symbols long dead, deposited them in a great cavern, dwarfing those that they had found before. It arced up and over, and buildings spread hither and yon, scatted across the ground and stacked high into the air. Some even hung from the ceiling of the place, covering every open wall conceivable. The Liarans must have been natively capable of flight, for nothing else allowed for this strange architecture.
Strange noises echoed throughout the metropolis, clanks and hisses and other strange whirrings, marking the first living noises that had been heard in this city. It was an eerie place, alive, yet empty and dead.

Two scientists + 1 bodyguard. I guess while they were thinking and reading, I was digging around in the rubble for more relics to take to them. Thraxis stops and stares, tilting his head back to take in the entire view, speechless at the vastness of the cavern. Finally, he breaks the silence. " Well... this will take a while."

"No doubt, but the place appears to be active, and warrants investigation."
Ferrus starts towards the nearest discernable source of the noises, perhaps some mechanism yet remains active despite the years.

The noises echo off of the cavern walls, but by stopping and listening at various places, Ferrus is able to locate the closest of the sounds. It is a waterwheel, dipping into the same river as they first stopped by, grinding away happily, driving something within the large warehouse style building that it is attached to. The only issue is that it remains on the other side of the river, and the nearest bridge has rotten and fallen away, and only the wooden stumps remain.

The river gurgles along happily through stone walls, a cheerful and fast current waiting to be touched.
