Our "Joys of Min/Maxing" Episode is by far our most popular (in terms of the episode with the most downloads and listens), so we've finally put together another Min/Maxing episode and it's a 2 parter on how to min/max.

Part 1 will be covering definitions and mostly about the Arbitrary Initial Decision- the first idea you have when you sit down to make a character and classifying where that idea comes from.

The show is up!  Finally!

Sode #34: How to Min/Max, Part 1: Definitions and Goals

February 16, 2009 By: Meg Category: Uncategorized Edit

Note: Sorry for the delay in this episode.  We had a lot going on.  Josh was in the hospital (twice), Meg had quick trips out of state (twice) and Zeke got a dog (just once, but he’s awesome enough for two).  We have the next two episodes all recorded and just need to edit and get them out, hopefully on schedule!
Warm-Up:

Each time we record, we watch a video or find a picture to get us in the mood for the episode. It doesn’t always have anything to do with the episode, but frames our minds, so we’re going to share so you can be appropriately framed as well.

    * Jonathan Richman’s I was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar
    * Clitter!

Icebreaker:

Strange sources of inspiration for gaming

    * Zeke was inspired by Tweeter and the Monkey Man and Moist Towellets
    * Meg wants to make a game based on Rocky Raccoon
    * Josh likes movie credits
    * Our guru, the always inspirational, Vince.

How to Min/Max Part 1:

Before listening, you should be familiar with

    * Min/Max Basics
    * The joy of Min/Maxing

The Rinse-Wow Method

Note: To compete this exercise, get a piece of paper and something to write with along with your normal character creation supplies

The Rules:

   1. There are no rules
   2. Never Cram
   3. Don’t try to do everything
   4. Be flexible
   5. Cast a wide net
   6. Hold nothing sacred

Defining Terms

   1. Goal- What you’re trying to accomplish in a character, your intentions for that character
   2. Element- The choices you make in terms of system specific stuff.  The building blocks of character generation.

How to Start:

Step 1: Initial Arbitrary Decision

    * Get inspiration!

IAD’s can fall into several categories

    * A specific race or class or other game element (put on element side)
    * A game mechanic or concept
    * A background or dramatic concept

Brainstorm and Stormbrain

Follow the Steps:

I'm as good as anyone at this point.  I had a drop in blood pressure that could have been caused by lots of things, most of which have now been ruled out.

Looking forward to part 2.

Of course - something to be aware when making goals would be to be talking/conspiring with the other players in the game.

One of my pet peeves is when a player comes to the table with a character that has no connection or ability to work with others.

.. oh - yes you talk about this a little bit. Smile Teaches me to respond until the cast finishes....

Actually - was there a session about "game group creation". I can easily see how this can be min/max'ed. Actually, it would probably be even better as it lets each character have their own niche and shine in their own way.

Hmmm. How would you min/max (for ex) a party of 3 fighters?

Good job, I look forward to part 2 as well. The ketchup thing reminds me of a story my dad told me that I wish I could have witnessed. A well dressed guy in an expensive convertible ran over the bloated corpse of a groundhog and his face, suit, and car interior were rocked by an explosion.

You know, if Zeke ever really DID get his own sitcom, I would have no choice but to watch every episode.

EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, DAMMIT!!!!!

(Sorry, I couldn't think of anything funny to write here, so I went with volume.  Volume's good, right?  Right?!)

Oh, yeah, nearly forgot: Maybe it's spelled Mrotsniarb, but it's pronounced "Stormbrain."  Eh?  Eh?!

EDIT: You know, I just read the above text again and I can't help but wonder if I'd had way too much caffeine before I wrote it...  Sorry about that...   Twitch

My point was: Zeke = Comedy Gold

Hopefully that message gets across through all my odd rambling...   Whistle

My only note at this point - without a thorough relisten - is to note that the stripper's back joke was funny when I saw it in the show notes. However, because that happened, and because you laughed so hard at the joke later, then said 'we should totally do...' it diminished the joke. I dunno, it feels like an attempt to show the baby twice and claim it's twins.

And... stormbraining?
