I had wanted this in the debates about specifics forum, as I believe that's the most appropriate area for it.

On the subject of 'fail' threads and the recent nonsi one. Would it be permissible to create individual threads in that forum with the sole purpose of, instead of ridiculing and mocking, asking for reinforcement is showing someone the error of their ways in another thread?

Or do you feel this would still be too caustic and too much of a spillover trap?

As I see it, the problem would be enforcement.

It wouldn't be hard for just a couple of people to turn this into the same thread as before.
Then, as now, any moderation done to fix it feels like it's just us picking on people or being jerks and shutting down people's fun.

It's certainly got the right idea behind it, but it also looks like a trap waiting to happen.

I meant, one thread to call for help in and/or discuss one other thread.

Then anything past that first linked thread or any spill over of arguments are off topic and should be moderated as such.  Smirk

Or, perhaps, just a "Help requested" thread, where only a single link is given per post, and any post not meeting the guidelines is trimmed every other day or so, and locked until trimmed if a hot discussion picks up?

That's certainly interesting.

I think the "Help requested" thread could work...
The first option spawns an ungodly number of threads, not to mention potential repeats of threads.

It's trying to balance the potential benefit of allowing these boards to bat around ideas and see what works and what doesn't, against a possible wave of douchebaggery and ego-stroking.

Discussion about the individual topics could be moved to appropriate areas of the board, which shouldn't be hard (especially with intelligent posters).
However, it feels awkward to have a place where people go to say "I can't figure out how he's wrong but he is!"

I don't speak for anyone but myself, but I think that the help thread might work.
The whole idea of these boards is that posters can be mature and reasonable.
I expect that with the appropriate expectations made known, the people here can handle this sort of thread.
We've had deviations in the past, but I'm willing to support another shot.
