There are two kinds of people.  Those who love "race for the galaxy" and those who have not tried it yet.

Yes the game is that awesome.

Has anyone here played it yet?

It really is a great game- original, unique-- so many ways to play, so many different strategies.  No waiting for anyone else... tons of fun.  I enjoy it more than Settlers or Carcassone right now.

I could not agree more.  I have played many many hours of RftG, both 2-player advanced and multiplayer.

Does anyone else have the expansion yet?  It's amazing how 20-odd cards can make the Military, Alien, and Gene strategies suddenly so much more viable!

Still came that eldritch, mocking cry - "Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!" and at last we remembered that the demoniac Shoggoths...had no voice save the imitated accents of their bygone masters.

Yeah I have it.

The first and most rewards are also real strategy enhancers.

We have done well with alien and military but I have not had a good genes game yet.

My favorite thing are the new start worlds.

So far I haven't seen a strong Alien game (despite the 3-Alien First reward coming up every time) but I've seen Genes work very well.  Military, of course, is STRONG.

One of the things I really love about this game is how the strategic value of a card is not always evident from the first read.  I had thought that Improved Logistics would be a reliable "gamebreaker", but so far I've seen it come out 5 or 6 times and so far, it's useful but not amazing.  Same with the new homeworlds - Ancient Race looks useless, but based on feedback from BGG it's pretty decent in actual play.

With the expansion, I have only gone for an Alien strategy and not won once.  I love it- it's definitely my new favorite.

I totally agree about Improved Logistics-- we too thought at first it would be a game breaker, and it's useful, but I've thrown it away too because it's not always worth it.  Very balanced.

I <3 this game.

One of my fellow D&D players has it, and 3 of us played it before gaming today. We actually delayed D&D so we could play a second game once I got the hang of it.

I am very much contemplating buying it for my "family game night" when I visit family for Thanksgiving.

I have a hard time finding card-game oriented people. You know, things like this make me wish there was, like, a downloadable, printable 'sample version' of the game.

I've already seen Military dominate games in the standard set, does the expansion really make it that much better? Alien and genes look like so much fun, but they also don't seem to viable without the expansion. I don't have it yet, but how much does it change those strategies?

The expansion makes military somewhat more powerful, and it makes genes and alien strategies actually viable assuming a good draw.  It's like building the brown or blue machine, if you get the cards you need you will dominate but if you don't then you're just going to idle until someone wins.

Oh man, I love this game...My boyfriend picked it up, and I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it at first.  However, this is one of those games that proves that I really can't judge something before I've tried it.
The first time I played it, it really didn't click...I just kinda stared at the board going 'Buh? Whatsat do now?'  But the second time around, the game really clicks.

I was actually there when we whipped that game out at AC's place...and if I'm not mistaken, it was likely me that was playing military that time (because I'm stubborn and I play military everytime).

Played it and liked it.  I have played a lot more San Juan which is similar, and anticipate playing some Glory to Rome which is supposed to use a similar mechanic as well.  Anyone used either of the expansions?  Do they add much useful?

the expansion adds some new starting worlds, two new strategies and tiles.  Tiles give you points for being first or most at certain goals.

They add more options while keeping the complexity level.  Meaning it makes the game interesting again for experts but simple enough for neophytes.

The second expansion "fixed" genes strategies and military strategies to a large degree.

Really good addition to the game

I have heard some murmurs that this expansion might make a military strategy slightly better than other approaches.  Any truth to this?

It makes military less a matter of luck and it makes it possible for more than one person to do a military strategy at a time.

I also feel like RvI fixes Development based strategies.

I also love Rebel Cantina.

I played for the first time at Gen Con.

It took playing it twice, but the game seems pretty good.

Having only played twice, it looks like a blitz strategy could really work decently.
