If you want Modern to go the 4e route then, yes, some faint hope, although this is a company that hasn't always made good on its claims: no 4th edition, Spectaculars, etc.

I found a good halfway mark for the HP issue in a 3.x D&D game:  2 HD.  One from race, the other from class.  That way, even a Wizard would start out with enough HP that they don't have to worry about being killed by a rat, but they won't have so many that they can go through more than a couple fights without backing off for rest.
