Idea that came to me while loading boxes of pipette tips at work. Better (read:simpler) rules for calculating XP rewards. I made the multiplier up on the spot, it sounded about right. The main change in how a game flows is that it takes 10 encounters to level up, instead of 13.3.

Characters require 1000 xp per current level in order to gain a level. Thus, a 12th level character needs 12000 xp to reach level 13. (This is just as it is now)

Each encounter grants 100 xp per its EL to each character. Thus, an EL 12 encounter grants 1200 xp to each character that participated, regardless of the number of characters participating.

Characters gain more or less xp based on their relative ECL to the EL. A character multiplies her XP gain for a given encounter by 1, plus 1/10 for each EL higher the encounter was than her ECL (or minus 1/10 for each EL lower). This calculation is performed for each PC individually, so higher level characters gain xp more slowly than lower level ones against the same encounters. Thus, if a 12th level character adventured with a 14th level party, and defeated an EL 14 encounter, she would gain 1400 xp, plus 2/10 times 1400, or 1680 total xp. The 14th level adventurers in the party, however, would only gain 1400 xp.

So you end up stuck in an endless loop, unable to act, forever.

In retrospect, much like Keanu Reeves.

I like this a whole lot better than what the DMG uses....

I agree. Much better.

For each EL above or below a given PC's ECL, an encounter's XP is multiplied by 1+X/10, where X is the number of ELs above or below that character's ECL.
This doesn't seem right. If the lvl 12 party fought an ECL 14, wouldn't it be: 1200xp x 1+2/10 = 360xp? Unless you mean to say they get an additional 360xp (total 1560xp).

That was what I was going to say, that part is worded strangely, or perhaps incorrectly. Other than that, it's much simpler.

Hm, you're right that it's a bit weird, but you did get most of the intent out of it. I'll go make that a bit clearer, I was in a bit of a hurry. The formula's right, at least. It's 1+2/10 in that example, not just 2/10, so the original xp is added to the 2/10.

Note that the base number that gets multiplied is 1400, though, since it was an EL 14 encounter (and thus worth 1400 xp on its own).

Come to think of it, the multiplier might be unnecessary since lower level characters need less XP to level anyway. Not sure. Also if the multiplier is too high, let me know.

Anyway, fixed it.
