Ok, I know this is an unpopular topic. I just got my Fr book in the mail today. I have a player who wants to be a cleric and another making a paladin. The cleric had chosen a god and was waiting for the book to find out if he survived and what her feats would be. The paladin has not picked a god yet. The book arrives and I immediately turn to look for the god in question, Ilmater, to see if he survived. So what feats go with this god? What feats go with any of the gods of FR? Ok, this is a campaign guide so I guess they are holding out for the player's guide before giving any of the information someone might actually need to say, play in this world. Has WotC posted this stuff on their website? Otherwise I'm thinking of tweaking the Raven Queen's power but you get to use that ability when the cleric is wounded instead of having done damage to a foe.

I said it before that this was a scam book, and that the only real crunch was going to be in the Player's Guide.

That said, thanks for spending the $30 to confirm it.

You can always just pick stuff for now and then let them retrain into more appropriate choices later.

I wouldn't call the Campaign Guide a scam - its for DMs and contains the fluff of the setting, which you'll need if you want to actually play in a game that resembles FR.

I just procured it via shady means. It has some items - some of them good - and rituals. And it seems that's it.

It's impossible to describe all of Faerun in a $30 book, especially with a corporation like WotC publishing it.  Much of it is bound to be re-printed in the Player's Guide and nitty-gritty stuff will likely get it's own setting book like Lost Empires of Faerun and Underdark.

It also has some monsters, a generic dungeon crawl adventure and NPC stats. I was reading some more and was very displeased to find that they had spoilers in the Thay section that blew the ending of the 3rd book of the Richard Lee Byers Haunted lands trilogy "Unholy". That book is to be released in early 2009.  They completely gave away the whole plot and ending. That my friends is duchebaggary.

This sentence does not parse for me. I suspect you meant "their", but I'm not sure ; you're probably using an expression I'm not familiar with. Help a non-native speaker here !

I read bits of it, not very impartially since I think the Spellplague and Co are a stupid shoehorning attempt. And indeed I ended up disappointed - I'm not a fan of the 4e Realms from what little I've seen. Not a bad setting at all in itself, but I would as well pick a different setting altogether where things don't feel forced.

Which is just as well because I prefer Eberron which should change a lot less. *fingers crossed*

Angelino to the rescue! Big Grin

"Pour one out for the homies," or in this case "pour out a little 40," refers to the gangsta tradition of spilling a small part of one's drink on the ground in tribute to deceased gang brothers.

In other words, you toss a little booze to remember the dead brothers by.

Thanks for the explanation - I would have understood the former.

Yes, I did feel for Mystra. Especially since she was killed in her divine domain, at the seat of her power...

After having read through the new FRCG, I've decided that I've got a lot of work to do. There are a lot of things they did that I don't like. Killing Mystra is a big one, also, the disappearance of some gods (Elistraee comes to mind immediately, but the whole nonsense with 'Hanali Celenil was always just Sune in disguise). Oh, and Lolth broke the rules of how gods grow or weaken ("She took these forms when, through the force of her own horrific will, she transformed into the greater goddess she is today." Gods can't just transform themselves into greater gods, they reach that status through a rise in number of worshipers.) I could go on about the problems in the Gods section for a while, as I have a lot of problems with it... FR gods have always been one of my favorite things about the world, and they really screwed them up.

I don't mind the time shift, or the change in geography, or the Spellplague stuff - except that the time shift meant a lot of my favorite NPCs are gone and dead from old age, since they were human. I can work with and around that, though, and some of the NPCs I liked are still around, given long life spans (dwarves and elves in particular.)

Also, I felt the layout of the book was whacked. Why did they feel the need to the turn the first 40 pages into some kind of module? Especially given that this book is much smaller than the FRCS from 3rd edition? (I know, there was an 'adventure' thing in the FRCS, however, I believe it took up less space, and was in the BACK of the book, where it belongs.) Given the reduced number of pages from 3rd to 4th, and the vast number of changes in the setting, those pages would have been much, much better used fleshing things out a bit further, rather than putting some kind of module-thing in the book. And if they absolutely had to have the module, it belongs in the back of the book, not the front.

Yes, X-Codes.  You were right.  Would you like a custom user title?  Something along the lines of "I Told You So?"

You know, now that you mention it, just about anything would be better than Bi-Curious George.  The notable exceptions being King Dong, Oflamintang, and Howler Monkey (wait for it... wait for it... yeah, NOW you get it!).

Anyway, just so we're clear on it, a similar scam book is probably... nay, almost certainly going to be released for Ebberron.

Ahem.

I think the really stupid thing about Mystra dying is her personal pimp Elminster keeping her seat warm. A friend of mine says that happened before (when? I'm unfamiliar with FR before 3e)...

EDIT: Also, +1 on the Bi-Curious George thing. I'm straight as a frikkin' arrow, here! I'd even prefer "Proud to be negative" to be my custom user title.

As one of Mystra's Chosen, Elminster (like all her other Chosen) kept a part of her power in himself. During the Time of the Troubles, when Ao cast the gods from the heavens for stealing the Tablets of Fate, Mystra used that to have her Chosen, particularly Elminster, hold a great deal of her power with the idea of retrieving it to help force her way back off the Prime Material (she also used a mortal named Midnight for this, putting most of her power into this mortal mage woman. Shortly after the beginning of the ToT, Mystra got her power back from Midnight, and tried to re-enter the planes, and was stopped by Helm. End result was Mystra died and Midnight became the new Mystra at the end of the Time of the Troubles.)
