Just finished "Assegai" by Wilbur Smith. Mediocre at best. Poor pacing, outlandish plot, one-dimensional characters, weak writing. The book came fairly well recommended, so I was hoping for something on the level of Pressfield's "Gates of Fire". Sadly, it was nothing close to that.

I just finished The Antichrist (or The Anti-Christian, depending on how you want to translate it) by Friedrich Nietzsche. Without touching on the content, I'm one of the first to jump to Nietzsche's defense when he's branded as a nazi, but I do have to admit that some of the language he uses doesn't exactly help his case. (Which may have to do with the fact that it was more or less commonplace before the thirties and forties.)

recently read the zombie survival guide, makes you look at the world in a new light for a while, now i'm in the middle of a couple great books about python and XHTML! i never could stand novels.... i'd rather read whatever the wikipedia random page button summons, or even a dictionary with decent etymology notes oh and cracked http://www.cracked.com/

Just finished The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya. Having seen the Anime and read the Manga versions of these stories already, I'd say I like the Manga's take on Mysterique Sign (unless the Kyon's grandparents arc is added in later), the Novel's version of Remote Island Syndrome (In Media Res is hella cool), and the Anime's version of Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (Can't put my finger on this one, might just be nostalgia since I watched the Anime first...). I can't decide which version of Boredom I liked best, but it wasn't ever my favorite story to begin with...

The Darkness That Comes Before by R. Scott Bakker.
Going to re-re-read House of Leaves to bridge the time between getting the next books in the series. My girlfriend wants to me read The Book of Lost Things as well.

Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach. Reading it for a university level Utopia/Distopia course. I'm actually re-reading it since I read it for a High School level Utopia/Distopia class.

Well, I've just started 1984 for the first time. The one I read just before that was Boneshaker, which is amusing to describe since it's a "Steampunk Alternate Civil War Zombie" book.

Just to be curious, is there any particular collection of Clark Ashton Smith you'd recommend? I'm trying to expand my collection of Weird Tales horror. The one I'm currently looking at is " Return of the Sorcerer" -- it caught my eye because Gene Wolfe wrote an introduction for it and the others I found were too pricey for someone I've never read (or just period for the $100+ collections I found @_@)
