Dear all,

I'm aware of the trick of casting planar binding and then immediately killing whatever creature comes out.  However, for this trick to work, the creature needs to be incapacitated in one round.

What would you do to prepare to kill off a creature you planar bind immediately?

Thanks,
Bill

What we use to do, is make the summoning circle inside a small room, and then fill it with water. Most outsiders wont have water breathing. This wont be immediate, but it is effective.

Prepare explosive runes?  Tongue

I once saw a trick for binding a succubus to you, I think carnivore wrote it up, that used a gaeas to have the creature pour water from a bucket or something that was outside the circle, plus a magic circle against X, and after a while the creature was hurt so bad it's save was shit. Only thing is, I don't think it did so in one round.

Get an uber charger to murder the outsider...

Put a lot of that paralyzing glyph (I don't remember the name) around the room, then coup de grace...

There are many other options, though... these are just off the top of my head...

Ghoul Glyph.
Cast it enough times and then summon your outsider in the area its paralyzed. Then coup degrace... Though I wonder if they can't use certain spell likes or supernats still...

Yeah, I use Ghoul Glyph for this purpose with my Dread Necromancer.  It works flawlessly.

Hmm,

So how many Ghoul Glyphs would i have to cast so that statistically it'll be very likely that it'll roll a natural 1.  I don't quite understand the use of Water in the room, I thought you would need line of sight to cast Planar Binding, and you normally couldn't cast it while underwater and you probably wouldn't want to cast it while a creature is next to you.  Also, when Summoning things like Nightmares that can plane shift at will, I'm assuming they could do it mentally and there wouldn't be time to kill it.

Just found out the old reliability equation:

Net Reliability =1 -  (1-r1)*(1-r2)*(1-r3)........

So by casting 90 Ghoul Glyphs, there's a 99.0112 % likelihood that the affected creature will roll a 1.  That's waaay too many ghoul glyphs.  Assuming 6 2nd level spells/day, that's 15 days, doable, but I think we can do better.

Assuming we can put pieces of paper with Explosive runes cast on them on the square we want to summon the creature, and that we can choose to fail a dispel magic check against the runes, that would seem to me since it's no save, that we can cast 10 runes for approximately 210 damage with a near guarantee of success.

Chose to fail  dispel check? Just write it in a language the creature understands in big red letters (or characters) and point at the ground when it finally appears.

It would have to read multiple things since we're using multiple explosive runes.

Holy word sounds nice, but I'm summoning a 12 HD Creature at level 11 and holy word is a 7th level cleric spell normally unavailable to wizards, how would you go about casting it?

You're level 11?  Use a CL 1 Wand of Dispel Ward (SC).  The DC to dispel an Explosive Runes is 21, the CL 1 Wand has a mere +1 bonus to the check, so you have a 5% chance of success, you don't even need to "voluntarily" fail, given that some DMs have issues with that.  You might pay for the upgrade to an Eternal Wand, since you're only going to be able to use so many rune bombs, and you might also pay for the one-time use of a scroll, since, again, you're only going to use so many rune bombs.

Am I the only one who is weirded out by why you want to do this? Isn't summoning a creature and then just killing it pretty meaningless? Couldn't you just not cast the spell in the first place?

He needs it for some kind of material, maybe? Undead? Spell components?

Outsiders make better zombies and skeletons than many other creatures, and I just summon what I want rather than having to wait for DM fiat to tell me what I find.  Wink

Outsiders do tend to make good undead.  With Create Undead, you can turn them into Bone/Corpse creatures, which retain all of the abilities, and then command them in some other way.
