I've been re-organizing my homebrew world from a huge, unwieldy binder to data files (I'm starting with Basket Notes, but I'll probably switch to Open Office), which may or may not be any more portable (I currently have no laptop/netbook/tablet/smart phone/etc) but are a lot easier to edit and maintain that way.

And I realized I've ripped off a good deal of things: earthmotes from 4e FRCS; almost directly importing Warforged and rather than tying them to a dwarf stroke of brilliance I noosed them to the Barrier Peaks, which is less like a future alien ship crash landing and more like DA:O's Amgarrak mixed with Second Apocalypse's Inchoroi. I've imported the reduced Greyhawk pantheon as well as handful of FR gods and some Eberron ones for good measure (having decided premade churches and conflicts is easier than making my own). I've even ripped off my old DM's setting by importing huge swathes of that (psionics tend to be from the desert, or drawn there, gnomes are exceedingly rare and usually psionic but come from overseas, he had a cool idea with an island of zombies with a treetop civilization, and who knows what he ripped off).

So, what have you ripped off to make your world a better place?

I've definitely rolled up multiple dungeons ripped straight from Diablo 1 and 2, including the big guy himself, but that's fairly standard stuff  Big Grin I ripped the entire premise of a campaign from a book series by Karen Miller (The Godspeaker Trilogy). From one of my old DMs I've imported in Gnome behaviors (insane made geniuses who can't do anything without explosions... although thats from Dragonlance too  ) One of the more humorous things I've dragged from an old DM was making all the magic merchants pixies. I had the players find the Zerg in my last campaign, but after the only character interested in fighting them wandered off from the party that storyline died kinda quick  Sad

The campaign I'm building right now rips shamelessly from the Heroes of Might and Magic series, especially the first 3 games. I've used the final battle scene between Armageddons Blade and the Blade of Frost before too.

I'm delirious from lack of sleep, but am sustained by the power of the Gatling Gun!

78% of DM's started their first campaign in a tavern. If you're one of the 22% that didn't, copy and paste this into your signature.

Oh man, all kinds of stuff, from tons of homebrew fixes/add-ons that I've found all over the web, to books (Steven King's Gunslinger inspired most of a RPG supplement I wrote years ago...), to movies, etc. I try to disguise some of it, but some I just use wholesale.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.

I barely disguise it, but I often use Melnibone and Cthulhu for cosmology.

Rules wise, I've been looking into using a lot of Tome rules, but I'm not sure how much that counts as "ripping off". Frank & K gave pretty explicit permission to use as much of it as you want, with or without attribution.

Theme/plot wise, I've probably ripped a lot off. Off the top of my head:
  • I've used the Predator from the movie of the same name.
  • I made a demon possession adventure that borrowed heavily from The Fallen.
  • I used David & the Gnome style gnomes.
  • I used night elves right after Warcraft 3 came out.
  • I created a surface dwelling race of evil elves that were cosmetically modeled after the dark archers from Diablo 2.
  • I created a whole slew of elf subraces based on the Elf Quest series.

I'm sure I've done even more, but this is what I could easily think of. I guess I've been playing this game for 17 years, so I'm probably scratching the surface, here.

Totally true.  Historians believe that most past civilizations would have endured for centuries longer if they had successfully determined Batman's alignment.

Why are so many posts on the board the equivalent of " Dear Dr. Crotch, I keep punching myself in the crotch, and my groin hurts... what should I do? How can I make my groin stop hurting?"

I suggest carving "Don't be a dick" into him with a knife.  A dull, rusty knife.  A dull, rusty, bent, flaming knife.

I don't even stat out commoners. Commoner = corpse that just isn't a zombie. Yet.

Buy a small country. Or Pelor. Both are good investments.

TV shows. The Star Trek series are a gold mine of good ideas.

That, and PETAE: People for the Ethical Treatment of Air Elementals. An extremist group from the world of Eberron, motivated to stop the lighting rail.

I steal from the video games Soul Reaver, Demon's Souls, Prototype, Soulcalibur, and Shadow of the Colossus.

I actually made a living construct that was 360 feet tall, but only CR 10. So epicly cool.

I don't know if the designers meant you to take Skill Focus for every feat.
Sounds a little OP.

The monk is clearly the best class, no need to optimize here. What you are doing is overkill.

It's like people who have no idea what a turn signal is. They ruin it for everyone else.
When another driver brandishes a holy symbol and begins glowing with divine light, seek cover or get spattered with zombie brains. I do not see what is so complicated about this.
