Base Creature(Aberration): Jurkalall remembers vaguely overhearing a conversation between retired adventurers exchanging stories and how one adventurer talked about his friend being grabbed by a hooked fiend and then had his arm nearly bitten off by its powerful rending beak. The retired adventurer across the terror commented that the creature was a Hooked Horror, and was an Aberration, not a fiend.
Template: Kerasot remembers that there are some constructs that mimic creatures' physical abilities. Ice beast is one ofn them. You know it has the cold subtype and construct traits, and probably some ice related ability on top of it's physical powers.
Kazaahk remembers more about this construct. In particular that unlike many, this type is -not- immune to magical attacks. It's creator can personalize it a bit by granted a different ice-related ability.
Jurkall--Nanshork, if you have Frostburn(or pdf), you may look at the page with that roll. While most ice beasts follow that stats outlined in the book, more powerful versions exist with near-sentient intelligence-but are far more expensive to make, and so are quite rare. Also, it is easy to see why they would be chosen for an area such as this, as they are both immune to the extreme cold and the effects of Soulbane.

So fight an optional battle or continue towards the rear gate?

I say we continue towards the rear gate. No need in alerting them to our presence unnecessarily early...
says the raptoran.
Unless you think we can take this construct silently? Well, quietly enough.

I doubt it. Best to not ruin our chance of surprise, yet.

A way less guarded would be preferable.

This one is loath to flee from battle, especially agaisn't such worthy opponent, but if it is this party's choice that this one avoid battle, than this one shall bend to it's wishes. This one also thinks that this course is maybe a better choice if this one keeps the goal of the mission in mind.

There will be time enough for honorable battle later, worry not.

Yes, there will be. I guarantee it.
So let's start moving around to the back side through the hills so as to remain hidden. Hopefully we are able to sneak up to the guards, if any, and take them out quickly and quietly. And if I'd choose between the two: I'd pick quietly.

You slip from shadow to shadow, seeing no living or nonliving creatures in the area. Hidden in the shadow of some rubble you are about 30 ft away from the back gate.
The door appears coated with a layer of ice, though you notice the key hole is still visibleand has no ice inside it.
(Spot checks from the raptoran and the arcanist. Arcanist has a -10 penalty from distance)

Jurkall sees in roughly the opposite direction of the door half the remains of a snowman. Why the heck there's a mostly-dead snowman outside a dungeon, no one can say. But other than the hint that sentient life occassionally leaves the castle, this little bit of knowledge is totally irrelevant to the matter at hand.
(you rolled so bad it was like rolling high for the exact opposite-friendly things)

The raptoran sees nothing out of the ordinary. No guards, no moving invisible creatures, nothing. Proceed.

Kerasot started moving forward, his steps sending heaps of snow everywhere around him, crunching loudly throught the snow after the raptoran. This one is deadly tired of all this pussying around. this one will walk to this door, kick it down, and fight whatever is behind it in honorable battle. THE EARTH LORD WILLS IT!Kerasot marches up to the backdoor that little bird was scouting and kicks it down: Kerasot, seeing his kick did not do as much damage as he wanted, waits a second to see if his knock alerted someone, than if nothing happens, he kicks it again. If the door breaks down:Kerasot steps in, his guisarme at the ready. If the door does not break down:Kerasot waits for everyone to be ready, than takes 20.
