So, what's everyone getting on the news about the reactor? German news are saying there were explosions, but it's unclear whether they're related to a possible meltdown. Austrian news are saying the meltdown is happening and the question is whether the hull will hold, and the more sensationalist media are acting like we have a second Chernobyl on our hands already. Including, apparently, worrying about how Austria will be affected. Literally on the other side of the world. This country makes me sick.
From what I can tell, the explosion just knocked down a few walls and hasn't interfered with the reactor (something about a hydrogen buildup caused by the cooling problem). Any radiation in the air right now is because of a decision to vent some of the reactor steam, which was only done to relieve pressure on the reactor itself and because the steam should only carry short-lived isotopes like nitrogen-16. The concern is that they've also found some cesium isotopes in the air, which suggests that the core might have been compromised.

Does the radioactive cloud (it's on its way already according to Austrian news, but I'm taking them with a grain of salt - confirmation would be nice) count as Air?

S'official, the demons are coming. The volcano probably energized their seals.
If Mt. Fuji erupts, humanity is doomed.

If it errupts 5 children born with mysterious marks will appear to fight them. Or something. Though I hope to god Fukushima doesn't go radioactive.

Yeah, the meltdown's progressing. I think it's either category 5 (3 Mile Island) or 6 by now. Chernobyl was a 7 iirc.
It doesn't help that the Japanese government isn't releasing all the information in attempt to prevent a mass panic.
With the small amount of land Japan gets (and the smaller amount that's suitable for large scale habitation) I'd hate to see any portion of it get significantly irradiated. (Well, again.)

Apparently, someone also discovered Atlantis recently. Does it feel to anyone else like all cliche movie premises are happening all at once this month?

If you believe the conspiracy theories, we've still got over a year. (Of course, if those are true, J.C. Denton will probably step in at some point.)

It's really ironic that on the way back home I was reading the Wall Street Journal (they give it for free where I study) and several "experts" claimed that this earthquake was the supreme example on how modern nuclear energy was now perfectly safe since any problem had already been completely solved.
I vote for throwing them on the frontlines when the mutant hordes attack.
Also, we still need aliens and giant monsters to fully confirm all the theories. Giant alien monsters will work too,

Somber mood on my part for Japan. Worse than Three Mile Island; and that's just the nuke part. ** Voltron was first ... became Power Rangers ... became Gundam.

Actually, the first Gundam series came before Golion/Voltron. Other than that, you're right.

You know what else gave more radiation exposure than standing a mile away from three-mile island? Standing a mile away from three-mile island when Chernobyl blew up. Discussing nuclear accidents using only TMI and Chernobyl as reference points is like discussing medical issues using only acne and anthrax as reference points.
