Yeah I've seen reports of it being 8.8 or 8.9 and a definite 7.0 aftershock. When the after shock is a major earthquake in and of itself it is pretty freaking bad. My rant from another forum related to this: WTF White House Staff!? Radio news report said the President wasn't woken up and told until more than 3 hours after the quake. You would think something this massive and potentially dangerous would deserve a more prompt informing of the president. There was potential for the tsunami from this to already be hitting Hawaii by the time they woke him up, a mega quake show on Discovery or History said for a quake like this the tsunami could travel over 600 mph so that is what my time estimate is being based on. Heard that Hawaii was getting waves from this but it wasn't nearly as big as they were expecting so no super tsunami is expected. It is rather tame outside of Japan as far as the damage caused by this quake so far.

Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D. Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

Expect badass martial artists, demons and mecha to start flying around.
Unfortenely, those only spawn when the catastrophe is caused by a nuclear blast, psionic awakening or giant monster attack. An earthquake is a natural disaster and thus doesn't provide an actual nemesis the heroes can focus their revenge on.

Chances of releasing Godzilla from his underground prison are pretty good.

How many earth-destroying ultimate attacks are seen in anime and video games? I have found a revenge-nemesis. Hereafter shortened to Revengesis. Which is the name of the anime I shall invent.

Well, untill her loli avatar appears and tells us how pissed she is personally, there's still nothing for the heroes to battle with, suffocating the development of giant robots and super martial arts.

C'mon, Osle, don't you get it?
In a lot of 90's fighting anime, the basic premise went something like this:
Tokyo suffers major natural disaster.
Major natural disaster precipitates economic crisis.
Economic crisis breeds social chaos.
Social chaos forces theretofore unknown-to-the-public shadow organizations/evil ancient menace unsealed by earthquake/demonic forces into the light.
Heroes emerge, epic battle ensues.

Even the current worst projections give radiation levels along the lines of "if you stick around inside the plant for two weeks we'll be able to notice it", so it's not really that bad.

So, what's everyone getting on the news about the reactor? German news are saying there were explosions, but it's unclear whether they're related to a possible meltdown. Austrian news are saying the meltdown is happening and the question is whether the hull will hold, and the more sensationalist media are acting like we have a second Chernobyl on our hands already. Including, apparently, worrying about how Austria will be affected. Literally on the other side of the world. This country makes me sick.

Around here, with Reuters as a source, there was a reactor breach, but nothing about a leak or an explosion.

Yahoo: A "meltdown" is not a technical term. Rather, it is an informal way of referring to a very serious collapse of a power plant's systems and its ability to manage temperatures. It is not immediately clear if a meltdown will cause serious radiation risk, and if it does how far the risk would extend.

I suppose that adds the radiation we need for espers and mutants to show up in Neo Tokyo. Gundam has fallen.

The mind transcends the body. It's also a little cold because of that. Please get it a blanket. I wish I could read your mind, I can barely read mine. "Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. At 2:15, it begins rolling up characters."
"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~" -Ibuki Suika, on overkill
