Can we go back to spoiler tags?  Fate/stay night Excalibur isn't a "cut stuff" NP, it's a "blast stuff" NP; Saber does most of her cutting with Invisible Air, which is Rank C. Caliburn is for cutting stuff, is high-rank, and gets stronger when Saber uses it. Plus Saber couldn't fire Excalibur at full power either (not enough mana); when she could in the other routes, Berserker was no match for her. EDIT: It seems this was the source of Gil's armor properties. The Type-Moon wiki is ambiguous on whether the armor can stop magic on its own or if that's in conjunction with a magic shield. EDIT: Ika Musume 2, ep2 Most of the "squid powers" so far sort-of made sense, but Ika can change her weight to anything between 0.5 grams and 20 tonnes? What.  What's more, it looks like this was invented to make the physics of the series more realistic.  |

Role matters though. A beam weapon is less effective when you're basically using it as a bayonet, compared to a lightsaber used the same way. Remember, rankings are differentiated. Berserker's armor counts ATTACK rank, Noble Phantasms are ranked by overall power. Using Enuma Elish as a melee weapon isn't going to get you very far despite its epic ranking. Saber mostly attacked with Invisible Air, which is firstly for concealment rather than combat, its not a good weapon.
Excalibur is a great weapon, but its role is a prana-to-explosion convertor. Without prana its a pretty good sword, but not worth its full ranking. Its blast however, especially at the impact point, is higher rank than its own.
Caliburn is ornamental, but its designed fundamentally as a slashing weapon. It makes a better melee weapon than Excalibur, but overall weaker.
Gae Bolg is a thrown weapon, as a melee weapon its not so hot, despite its overall rank.
Enuma Elish is a beam weapon, I imagine if Gilgamesh could stab Shirou with it through Kanshou and Bakuya instead of spending time charging its lasor he would have.

Invisible Air is a slashing weapon which she uses by default. It's very useful, what with being invisible and having ranged-attack and barrier functions, just not high-rank enough to use on Berserker. Note that just Invisible Air would have killed Assassin instantly if it had made contact. And again, rank =/= power. Rin's gems were A-rank by human standards, so a handful of them could kill Berserker once. It was stated that Berserker could tank a planetbuster if it was B-rank or lower. Yeah, this is pretty much Nasu saying "God Hand does whatever I want it to."  |

^^ As a bonus, if Rin had blown 10 gems on the attack instead of 5, she might actually have killed Berserker more than once as Ilya said. So God Hand is just a minimum energy threshold and it doesn't take more effort after that.
Saber is extremely good with the sword, most of her power comes from skill, backed with a nuke when skill doesn't matter. However, she is weaker out of the box, since Caliburn was broken and lost(presumably if you dug up Caliburn you could summon her with it instead of Avalon), as was Avalon. So depending on the focus you used she could be attack or defense oriented.
Plus again, her abilities are hideously power consuming, she expends significant amounts to enhance herself physically, and finally, Excalibur is the most energy consuming NP there is. Shirou is basically the worst Master she could hope for, since hes a mana supply with a melee spec and no mount for her to use her Riding with(unless she wants a bicycle).
Finally, the Class Saber is oriented towards a Servant associated with the sword, while it does imply a certain minimum of sword skill, it only means her legend is linked to a blade. Archer doesn't use a bow much and Rider spends most of her time using her monstrous strength, agility and melee weapons. |

tier 6 -Kung-Fu Teacher, has some cute tricks, but whitout extreme magic backup just doesn't have the numbers to do anything. tier 5 -Saber (whitout splatbook items), can't really produce her own equipment besides her ancestral relic, needs mages backing her up to do really anything. Her only saving grace is her awesome nukes, but 1/day really doesn't cut it. tier 4 -Lancer, save or die would be quite nice, if immunity to instant-death effects wasn't so darn common! -Rider, quite versatile and can pack quite a punch if you catch your oponent by suprise, but somewhat lacking in raw power. tier 3 -Berseker, extremely tough to take down whitout Archer shenigans and hits back hard too, overall quite balanced! -Caster, can melee better than Saber, teleport is quite handy, but if you're trying to blast with her you're doing it wrong, even inside your personal domain. -Assassin, super stealth is so cheesy, and can actually kill stuff in martial combat whitout magic weapons! However that lack of magic weapons also ends up stoping it from raising another tier. tier 2 -Archer. Tecnically you only have one Noble Phantasm, but then you just pick Replicate Noble Phantasm and go to town by literally drowning your oponent in magic weapons! -Saber(with splatbook items)-The supplements of Avalon and Caliburn were basically a godsend for this class, bringing it all the way from tier 5 to here, as now she can actualy engage in melee combat and win whitout heavy caster backup. Wait, she needs a caster to unlock those weapons, but still, at least she can melee better than Caster now! tier 1 -Shirou-After people complaining in the previous edition that this class could only cook and play buffbot, the designers filled it with so many self-buffs that it's just plain sick. You can replicate even more noble phantasms than Archer, melee better than Saber (and can also copy her unique nukes and Avalon, something that even normal Archers can't do), graft yourself with pieces from defeated enemies, plus the infamous cookmancer build to make an harem out of your oponents |
