I like how that anime is simultaneously less and more sophisticated than some of its counterparts. The artstyle seems to lend itself a little more to a child's story (we have people being cut by swords though, so it's not really a kid show). On the other hand, the story is engaging and the characters have a funny collection of personal quirks. Overall, it feels a little more fairy tale-ish than usual, but it's a good kind of fairy tale.
That's why its title translated means tales of swords.

Dude, my kids will NOT be born only at age 18. Thank god right? If you didn't have all those cute years there is no way you would put up with them during their teenage years.

"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~" -Ibuki Suika, on overkill

Rakan does, yes - which makes sense, since they were in his party. Eva most certainly doesn't. That's the look of someone who just shat as many bricks as the reader, not of someone who saw it coming. Tertium... I dunno, it looks like he might've known too. Well, MotB sort of was his boss. WMG
